'Ours Didn't Work The First Time': Chrissy Teigen Speaks Out About The Reality Of IVF Treatment

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's path to parenthood was not easy. The couple welcomed daughter Luna in 2016, son Miles in 2018, daughter Esti in January 2023, and son Wren via surrogate in June of the same year, but the journey was taxing. Teigen has been candid when discussing personal matters, including being one of the many celebrities to open up about their plastic surgery experience, and has spoken about her experience with IVF. She began the process after years of trying to conceive naturally. "John and I were having trouble. We would have had kids five, six years ago if it had happened," she revealed during an episode of "FABLife" (via Entertainment Tonight).

Their first attempt at IVF was unfortunately deemed unsuccessful, and Teigen recalled being heartbroken over the news, blaming herself. She told The Cut in 2018, "Ours didn't work the first time, and it was devastating. You realize that a lot of it is luck, and you can't blame things on yourself." After further rounds, she learned she was pregnant with her first daughter, which still came as a shock to her. "I think it kind of doesn't matter whether you do all that preparation or whether it's a surprise ... But then you hear from enough people that you're never really ready, and you just go for it."

Chrissy Teigen has worked to normalize the IVF conversation

Chrissy Teigen has utilized her voice and experience regarding IVF to break the stigma surrounding the procedure. After losing her third baby, Jack, in 2020, she posted a photo on Instagram in 2022 announcing her intention to try again. In addition to sharing her own milestones, the "Star Search" panelist has contributed to a larger movement with the purpose of raising awareness about the difficulties faced when conceiving a child.

In 2021, Teigen partnered with The National Infertility Association and Ferring Pharmaceuticals for the Fertility Out Loud campaign, which aimed to encourage conversation around the topic. Her work reflects her experience, as she advocates for women to be aware of their bodies, whether it's spotting potential signs you may have fertility problems, or what women should know about their biological clock. Through her advocacy and her openness about her fertility experience, Teigen has managed to shift the narrative surrounding IVF, and inspired many women to look for medical help and support when dealing with their reproductive struggles.
