Despite what social media may tell you, postpartum journeys aren't always blissfully Instagrammable. In May 2026, "Nashville" star Hayden Panettiere opened up about her own challenging experience in the aftermath of having her daughter Kaya, whom she shares with her ex Wladimir Klitschko, in December 2014. She penned her revelations in her autobiography "This Is Me: A Reckoning," and in a personal essay for The Cut. "I labored with Kaya for 14 hours and was in surgery for three hours after she was born," the actor wrote in the essay. "When I woke up in the recovery room, I was exhausted, disoriented, and racked with pain." Though she survived the traumatic birth, Panettiere struggled to bond with her newborn daughter.
"Kaya was gorgeous with blonde peach fuzz covering her head and wide, pink lips that curled up as she slept," she wrote. "I had always heard that mothers feel an instant rush of love the moment they lay their eyes on their baby, but I felt nothing. Kaya was just there, and now I had to figure out how to bond with her. It felt like an insurmountable task, and I was only on the first day."
What Panettiere was feeling was the beginning of postpartum depression, which contributed to her developing a dependence on alcohol as a coping mechanism. By the time Kaya was four months old, she went into treatment for her addiction. However, though Panettiere managed to get sober, her postpartum depression remained, leading to more problems when she returned home. Though she'd spent a long time hiding the truth from the public, she told Gayle King on "CBS Mornings" in a May 2026 interview that she's choosing honesty to help dismantle the stigma for those having similar experiences.
Hayden Panettiere made the decision to give up full custody of Kaya
In her eye-opening essay for The Cut, Hayden Panettiere revealed that though her first stint in treatment helped her with her alcohol addition, she developed a new addiction to the medication she'd been prescribed for insomnia. "If I didn't take them, I couldn't sleep," she explained. "If I did, I slept too much. I'd walked into rehab addicted to one substance, and I'd walked out completely dependent on something else." Her use of insomnia medication led to her being sent to the hospital when she couldn't be woken up, and eventually, she was able to wean herself off the medication. However, this shift also marked her return to alcohol dependence.
"The producers had no choice but to write me out of the script temporarily — something that killed me because I'd always prided myself on my professionalism — and I issued a statement about where I was going and why," she wrote in her essay. Being temporarily written out of "Nashville" in 2015 led to other lucrative contracts being canceled, which perhaps fueled her postpartum depression. "I wanted more than anything to get back to that place of happiness, but I didn't even know where that place was anymore," she admitted.
In 2018, Panettiere officially split from Wladimir Klitschko, and also made the heartbreaking but selfless decision to give him full custody of Kaya. Supporting her through her postpartum depression, Klitschko took Kaya to live in Ukraine, and Panettiere was able to focus on pursuing sobriety. After seeking treatment in 2020 and 2021, she told The New York Times that she was celebrating two years sober in April 2023. Three years later, the release of "This Is Me: A Reckoning" ushered in a new era for Panettiere: one of courageous honesty.
Hayden Panettiere has a healthy relationship with her daughter
In 2026, Hayden Panettiere, who's had a stunning hair transformation, maintains a healthy long-distance relationship with her daughter, making frequent trips to Ukraine to see her in person and communicating via video calls when she can't. She told Gayle King on "CBS Mornings" that Kaya is especially proud of her work in 2006's "Bring it On: All or Nothing," and shared with E! News in May 2026 that the tween is even considering following in her mom's footsteps to become an actor. Panettiere also has a good relationship with Wladimir Klitschko, which makes her one of the celebs who have co-parenting down to a science.
While her life has improved exponentially since getting sober, she told King that being honest in her memoir has been emotionally difficult, but it's worth it to help those who might be going through the same thing. And it seems that fans are not only moved by her story, but appreciative that she's shining a light on an issue we don't talk about enough. "Good on her for sharing her story and doing what was best for her daughter," one Instagram user applauded. "Postpartum is no joke. I wish it was taken more seriously." Another Instagrammer praised her candor: "Omg this is one of the best interviews i have ever seen. She is so powerful and real. I love the honesty about her."
Writing for Forbes in May 2026, family law attorney Morgan Mouchette also commended the "Remember the Titans" actor for opening up about her difficult journey. She noted that Panettiere's honesty helps to clear up the misconception that new parents don't have mental health struggles, and highlights the importance of seeking help when it's needed.
