Tiffany Haddish's Journey Toward Self-Love Included One Cheeky Marriage Trick

For the past two and a half decades, Tiffany Haddish has built her career on fearless honesty. Whether sharing stories from her childhood or speaking openly about heartbreak, the comedian rarely filters herself. Behind the punchlines is a woman who has spent years intentionally building her sense of self-worth. One of her most unconventional acts of self-love? Marrying herself. Quite unexpected, but not entirely unsurprising from Haddish, a fearless celebrity who re-wore outfits on multiple red carpets. In a 2026 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover shoot, the actor reflected on a personal moment that happened during the filming of her Peacock docuseries, "Tiffany Haddish Goes Off."

In the documentary, Haddish held a ceremony where she married, well, herself. The "Girls Trip" star stood in front of a mirror, where she recited personal vows and even kissed herself in the end. Although it sounds comedic, Haddish explained how important the moment was for her. "The longest relationship you're ever going to have in your entire human existence will be the one with yourself," she told Sports Illustrated. "How you treat yourself is really important because it signals to the world how they can treat you."

There are many ways to show yourself self-love, and Haddish's solo wedding is certainly an interesting way to do it. But even if it sounds silly, if it works, it works — and that's really all that matters. Haddish refuses to frame self-love as a trendy wellness concept and instead has referred to it as ongoing emotional work.

Tiffany Haddish says growth requires constant check-ins

Part of Tiffany Haddish's self-care philosophy involves continuously analyzing what truly brings her happiness. Since self-love has to be the heart of any solid relationship, the actor explained that self-discovery is not a one-time thing and requires room for evolution. "The things that made me happy last year don't necessarily make me happy this year," she explained to Sports Illustrated. "If you want to keep growing, you have to constantly be asking, 'What makes me happy now?' I want to keep growing, keep evolving, so I'll keep doing that work."

Haddish's mindset extends into other areas of her life, like the way she shows up for others. Aside from her memoir, films, and tours, the comedian founded the She Ready Foundation. The organization is focused on supporting and uplifting children in foster care. One of the foundation's most significant efforts is distributing suitcases to foster children, so they have something to carry their belongings in, rather than walking around with trash bags, which hits close to home for Haddish.

"When I was in foster care and was getting moved around a lot, all of my things were in trash bags — it made me feel like garbage," she said in a 2022 interview for the Variety Changemakers Summit. "I'll never forget the day I got a suitcase because it changed how I felt about myself. At that moment, I promised myself that if I ever got any kind of power, I'd make sure no kid felt like garbage." Haddish's self-care outlook circles back to the same idea — self-love is ever-evolving, consistent, and unconditional.
