5 Celebrity Baby Names That Got Way Too Much Hate

Choosing the perfect baby name can be a daunting task for any new parent, and it has to be even harder to do so with the whole world watching. Many celebrities have had to face the court of public opinion over the name they picked out for their child, and some famous "nepo babies" have had to listen to lifelong chatter regarding their unique monikers. Other stars have shared their baby names before their child was actually born, opening up the door to a whole sea of opinions, which is exactly why Meghan Markle's baby-naming advice comes down to not doing one crucial thing.

Whether it be an extension of their creativity or an attempt to make their child stand out, celebrity parents often look for very distinctive baby names, some of which, we admit, are just downright strange. But some unconventional baby names in Hollywood have grown on us over the years, and many celebrity children have developed personalities that make their names surprisingly fitting. Stars like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and more have found themselves facing backlash over their baby names, but many of their kids' monikers really didn't deserve the hate.

The internet had a field day with 'North West'

When Kim Kardashian was expecting her first child, the public waited with bated breath to hear what baby name she and Kanye West would settle on. The name "North" had already been on the public's radar — mostly as a joke — so when the reality star actually named her firstborn child "North West," the online ridicule was on another level. Even fellow celebrities couldn't help but poke fun at the name, like Kathy Griffin, who tweeted a few days after North's birth in June 2013, "North West? They've won the prize 4 most ridiculous celebrity baby name, & lemme tell u, it wasn't easy. Kudos."

While appearing on sister Kylie Jenner's YouTube channel in 2020, Kardashian explained how she decided on the name North, revealing that it was Jay Leno who gave her the idea when he made a joke about the name. Initially, the SKIMS founder remembered saying, 'No way. I would never name my daughter that,' but after thinking about it for a while, she wound up with a baby girl named North. As she's grown up, North, often nicknamed "Northie" by her family, has seamlessly grown into her moniker. North West has cultivated a style all her own, so the one-of-a-kind name perfectly suits her. "They really become the name you name them," Kardashian said on her sister's YouTube channel.

Will Ferrell's name for his firstborn son was completely misunderstood

After Will Ferrell welcomed his first child with wife Viveca Paulin in 2004, some fans were thrown off by their chosen baby name, Magnus Paulin Ferrell. However, the criticism was mostly due to a misconception about the reasoning behind the name. "Magnus" translates to "big" or "great" in Latin, which is mostly what the public latched on to. "I've gotten a lot of flack," the "Step Brothers" star joked in a 2006 People interview. He added that one of the primary sentiments he receives is, "What kind of ego do you have to have to name your child the great one?"

But the name holds a special meaning for Ferrell and his wife, who both appreciated that Magnus is a popular Scandinavian name. "My wife was born in Sweden, and we loved the idea of a Scandinavian name," the actor said in 2006, putting to rest the judgment about his son's name. Ferrell and Paulin even carried on the tradition when they welcomed two more sons together, Mattias and Axel, both of whom were also given Scandinavian names.

'Apple Martin' practically broke the internet

Out of all the celebrity baby names that have ruffled feathers, perhaps one of the most heavily-mocked monikers was that of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's daughter, Apple. "She was born, and it became an international outrage," Paltrow said in a 2004 interview on Oprah Winfrey's talk show (via People). The "Shakespeare in Love" star said she found the backlash "surprising because there are people named Rose, or Lily, or Ivy, or June, or lots of pretty nouns."

Paltrow also revealed in the same interview that it was Apple's father who came up with the name. "When we were first pregnant, [Chris] said one day, 'If it's a girl, I think her name should be Apple.'" Paltrow recalled. "It just sounded so sweet, and it conjures such a lovely picture for me, you know, apples are so sweet, and they're wholesome, and it's biblical, and I just thought it sounded so lovely." Despite the public's very strong opinions on her name, Apple has never let the haters stop her from being her most authentic self, and Apple Martin's stunning style transformation over the years proves that she is not afraid to stand out in a crowd.

The name 'Stormi' somehow fits Kylie Jenner's daughter perfectly

Kylie Jenner kept her first pregnancy very much hidden from the public. Not only did she shock the world when she announced her daughter's birth in February 2018, but she also surprised fans a few days later when she revealed her baby girl's name, Stormi Webster. The name, as well as its unique spelling, was unlike anything her fans had heard before, and it ensured that Stormi was destined to be one of a kind.

Months after Stormi's birth, Jenner revealed that she initially planned to spell the name with an "ie" at the end, to match her own first name. "I mean, I bought custom things for her that said 'ie' and bought her the blocks that said 'ie,'"Jenner recalled while filming a YouTube makeup tutorial in 2018. It wasn't until days later, when she was filling out the birth certificate, that Jenner decided to drop the "e" from her daughter's name. Regardless of what the public may have thought, Jenner believes that the name was meant to be. "Stormi always felt like her name from when she was in the womb," she explained. "It's almost like she chose her name."

'Blue Ivy' never deserved all the hate

When Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed their first child together, her name took the world by storm — and not in a good way. The moniker "Blue Ivy" set off an avalanche of online jokes and public criticism, with tons of people ruthlessly expressing their distaste for the name. In fact, Blue Ivy was voted the "Worst Celebrity Baby Name of 2012," according to a poll conducted by BabyNames.com. It didn't help that Blue Ivy's famous parents tried to trademark her name (to no avail), only giving haters more reason to poke fun at the entire situation.

Ironically, Blue Ivy's once-mocked name has come to be widely accepted by fans, especially as she's grown up. Over the years, she has solidified herself as a talented artist in her own right, performing alongside Beyoncé on the Cowboy Carter Tour and voicing a character in the 2024 Disney film "Muufasa: The Lion King." Blue Ivy has even had a stunning style transformation, evolving from Beyoncé's mini-me to a budding fashionista.
