'I Did Torture Myself': Demi Moore Has Been On A Long Journey To Accept Her Body
For decades, Demi Moore, who has had a stunning style transformation, embodied Hollywood beauty standards and became famous for her striking looks and physically demanding roles. But, behind the glamorous red carpet shots and film stills was a difficult relationship with her body. In a 2025 interview for People's World's Most Beautiful issue, the actor reflected on the extreme lengths she went to in order to live up to said standards and how she learned to treat herself with far more compassion.
Moore admitted that her old approach to fitness and wellness was rooted in punishment as opposed to self-care. "I did torture myself. Crazy things like biking from Malibu all the way to Paramount, which is about 26 miles. All because I placed so much value on what my outsides looked like ... And straight up, I was really just punishing myself," she recalled. The Oscar-nominated actor said she spent years trying to control her appearance, believing that relentless effort was the only way to maintain the image she felt she needed in the public eye, giving us all a lesson in how to stop comparing ourselves to unrealistic body standards.
Demi Moore learned to prioritize her mental health over her outward appearance
Demi Moore's face has transformed over the years, and so has her outlook on life. The actor, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in "The Substance," a film that depicts society's beauty standards and the lengths people will go to maintain them, has since reflected on how the immense pressure to look a certain way impacted her. During an interview with "The Today Show," she said, "At the end of the day, it's the violence of how we look in the mirror, the compare and despair, that leaves us feeling so bankrupt."
Since then, she has stopped operating from that mindset and has instead actively embraced one that feels more aligned with herself. "I do have love for my body, but it's more about appreciation — I can really appreciate all that my body does for me now, not just how it looks," she told Elle in 2024. Even in her everyday routine, she focused on nourishing herself for long-term well-being, with activities like combining proper sleep, journaling, and meditation with a nutrient-dense diet that includes foods like eggs. After years of striving for perfection, Demi Moore said she is finally more comfortable in her own skin than ever before, a journey that has ultimately brought her a greater sense of peace and freedom.
