Sharon And Ozzy Osbourne's Relationship Was A Turbulent & Deeply Loving Ride
The following article includes allegations of domestic abuse as well as discussions of addiction.
The rock and roll world has had some incredibly iconic couples, with Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne being at the top of that list. The late singer made a name for himself in the '70s as Black Sabbath's lead vocalist, but as with many rock stars, he battled his fair share of demons. Ozzy met Sharon through her father, who was managing Black Sabbath at the time, and he later wrote in his 2009 memoir, "I Am Ozzy," that he fell for his future partner quickly (via USA Today). "It was that wicked laugh that got me. And the fact that she was so beautiful and glamorous — she wore fur coats and had diamonds dripping from everywhere," the "Crazy Train" singer recalled.
Sharon and Ozzy married in 1982, and although they deeply loved each other, their relationship was fraught with ups and downs. From helping her husband overcome addictions to uncovering affairs, Sharon Osbourne saw it all. Still, despite a couple of separations, the two stuck together until the end, never saying "Goodbye to Romance" after decades of their roller coaster marriage.
Sharon Osbourne helped Ozzy revive his career
Black Sabbath was one of the biggest heavy metal bands of the '70s, but the members got caught up in drugs and alcohol after a couple of their albums flopped. Ozzy Osbourne, in particular, spiralled so hard that the group kicked him out in 1979. "We just couldn't continue with Ozzy. As much as everyone wanted us to, we just couldn't do it. Nothing was happening and it would have meant the end of the band. We didn't want to fire him but we had to if we wanted to continue," guitar player Tony Iommi shared, per Loudwire.
Sharon Osbourne convinced Ozzy to go solo and became his manager. "It was just a magical time. When you believe in something so much, and your whole being is in it, and I had a lot to prove. Ozzy had a lot to prove," Sharon told Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan in his podcast, "The Magnificent Others," in 2025. She added, "He didn't believe in himself. He kept saying, 'I know I can't do it without Sabbath. You know nobody will want me. Nobody will remember me. They won't care about me.' And I'm like, 'Nah, you can do it.'" Despite Ozzy's doubts, his first solo album, "Blizzard of Ozz," was well received. He then became one of the biggest singer-songwriters of the '80s and '90s, all with the help of Sharon, who has since transformed from Ozzy's wife to a bona fide star.
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's relationship was filled with tumultuous fights
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne adored each other to pieces, but the flip side of their shared passion was their tendency towards intense squabbles. "Our fights were legendary," Sharon told The Guardian in 2001, adding that she and Ozzy would get physical with each other. She continued, "At a gig, Ozzy would run off stage during a guitar solo to fight with me, then run back on to finish the song! We were in the gutter, morally, and I realized that if we both carried on, we'd wind up a washed-up pair of old drunks living in a hovel somewhere. So I stopped drinking." Osbourne surely realized fighting with your partner is a journey, not a battle to win, which probably saved her marriage.
Back in 1989, Ozzy's drinking and drug abuse got so bad that he strangled Sharon, which led to his arrest for attempted murder. In the 2020 documentary, "Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne" (via People), Sharon recalled her husband saying to her, "We've come to a decision that you've got to die." She added, "He was calm, very, very calm, and he lunged across at me. I felt the stuff on the table and felt the panic button, and just pressed it. Next thing I know, the cops were there." Sharon dropped the charges, and Ozzy entered a treatment center for six months. That wouldn't be the last time he attempted to get sober.
Sharon Osbourne stood by Ozzy through years of his attempted sobriety
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's marriage has been fraught with drama for years, and it started a lot earlier than many would have thought. In 2017, the matriarch revealed in "The Big Interview With Dan Rather" that problems began escalating after four years of marriage, following the birth of her eldest child, Aimee Osbourne. Sharon blamed Ozzy's drinking and drug use, and told Rather that after having Kelly Osbourne, she discovered the Betty Ford Center and had her husband admitted. Unfortunately, the program wasn't successful for the "Mr. Crowley" singer, with Sharon stating, "He was there seven weeks, a week longer than usual ... And he came out at noon and was drunk by 2." The television personality shared that Ozzy was sober and fell off the wagon numerous times over the years, but Sharon stayed with him anyway because she didn't want a divorced family.
In 2013, Ozzy finally held on to sobriety and reflected on his decades-long substance abuse. "I've always been self-medicating because I've never liked the way I felt. [...] And so, from a very early age, I used to sniff fumes, all kinds of things, anything to get me out of my head," he told Variety in 2021. Sharon told the publication how things had changed after Ozzy's sobriety, "Very calm in the house. It's very pleasant in the house. It's great for our whole family. It really is."
Ozzy Osbourne's affair devastated Sharon
Being married to a rock star has its perks, but one of the many downfalls is having to deal with indiscretions. In 2016, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's marriage was rocked by affair drama when the television host discovered that her husband had been seeing a hairstylist named Michelle Pugh for years. The mom of three told Dan Rather that she discovered the affair after Ozzy unknowingly sent her an email meant for the other woman. Sharon recalled feeling devastated by the infidelity and wanted to leave the marriage, but Ozzy told her he was done cheating. "Six months later, I found out [he] wasn't, and there were others ... and I moved out again," she stated.
Following Ozzy's death in July 2025, his final memoir, "Last Rites," was published. In the book, he wrote, "I broke my wife's heart, and I'm lucky she forgave me. I just hope all the people I hurt know how sorry I am — including the kids, who were badly affected" (via People). Sharon stayed by Ozzy's side until his death. In December 2025, she revealed to Piers Morgan the poignant last words the love of her life said to her. Sharon tearfully shared, "It was like 4:30, and he said, 'Wake up' ... and he said, 'Kiss me,' and then he said, 'Hug me tight." She later added, "If only I'd have told him I loved him more. If only I'd have held him tighter."
