With a new "Little House on the Prairie" hitting Netflix in July 2026, and a second season already green-lit, interest in "Little House" is on the rise. Yes, it might be time to break out the prairie dresses and these cottagecore hairstyles to complete your dreamy look. Unbelievably, it's been more than 50 years since the original show debuted in 1974 and ran until 1983. Through those nine seasons, fans watched the Ingalls family — Pa and Ma (Charles and Caroline) and their three daughters, Mary, Laura, and Carrie — overcome the obstacles that came with living on the frontier in the late 1800s. On Monday nights, it was a tradition in many American households to watch the heart-warming drama, most notably freckle-faced Laura Ingalls and her on-screen nemesis Nellie Oleson, with her blond ringlets. These days, we sometimes still think about those freckles and ringlets, and what became of them.

It turns out the leading ladies of "Little House" have aged beautifully. While Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura, grew out of her two side braids and freckles, we can still see the child actor in her features. The others have had more notable transformations, however. Without further ado, here's what the leading ladies of the original "Little House" look like now.

We can still see Laura Ingalls in Melissa Gilbert

In "Little House," Melissa Gilbert played the lead character of Laura Ingalls, based on the real-life author whose books about living on the prairie inspired the TV series. In the '70s and '80s, the actor was instantly recognizable thanks to her long chestnut hair and freckles. Off-screen she embodied the early '80s with her voluminous hair and colorful makeup.

Jumping ahead five decades through Melissa Gilbert's complete transformation, and we can still see glimpses of the child actor. Though she's let her brown hair fade to gray, she's still recognizable with her bright eyes and unassuming smile. In 2023, at age 59, Gilbert attended an award ceremony in Monaco looking upbeat. In 2024, she discussed with People how leaving Hollywood helped her escape the pressure to look young. Nowadays, she's still channeling her "Little House" days with her side hustles: In 2022 she released the book, "Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade, A Life Rediscovered," and the same year she started lifestyle brand Modern Prairie.

Karen Grassle has aged beautifully since her Little House on the Prairie days

Karen Grassle, who played Caroline "Ma" Ingalls on "Little House," was usually wearing her hair in a low bun, often with a bonnet over the top. But off-screen in the '80s, Grassle had a more on-trend haircut from the time, with a layered, feathered style, but kept her makeup minimal. This is in contrast to co-star Melissa Gilbert, who embraced '80s maximalism.

Though Grassle's acting career never hit the heights of her "Little House" success, she continued to perform in screen and stage roles. She also wrote the book "Bright Lights, Prairie Dust: Reflections on Life, Loss, and Love from Little House's Ma" in 2021, documenting her time on the series. In 2024, at age 82, she appeared at a film festival in Monaco, wearing a chic pixie — a hairstyle that's perfect for older women with fine hair.

Melissa Sue Anderson has changed drastically from then to now

As Mary Ingalls on "Little House," one of Melissa Sue Anderson's most unforgettable story arcs was when the oldest Ingalls sister went blind. Fans will remember her clear blue eyes expressing unspoken emotion. Those eyes, Anderson's cherubic face, and her shiny bouncy curls were what made her equally appealing off-screen in the 1980s.

Anderson has continued acting, and joined her former co-stars in writing a memoir about her "Little House" experience in "The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House." Nowadays, instead of the long dark-blond hair that Mary wore, Anderson has a collar-bone-grazing buttery-blond haircut, which she showed off in Monaco in 2024, at age 61, as she appeared alongside her former cast mates. A fan on Instagram wrote, "She's aging very well & so pretty." Others added comments about her piercing blue eyes, which are still stunning.

The actor who played Nellie Oleson is barely recognizable now

"Little House" villain Nellie Oleson is still considered one of the OG mean girls of television, with her nasty tongue perpetually aimed at Laura Ingalls. With her blond jumbo ringlets and hair ribbons, she was also distinctly recognizable. Off-screen, however, actor Alison Arngrim wore straight hair away from the "Little House on the Prairie" set.

Arngrim continued dabbling in acting, wrote "Confessions of a Prairie B*tch: How I Survived Nellie Olseon and Learned to Love Being Hated," and became an AIDS activist after her co-star Steve Tracy, who played her on-screen husband Percival, passed away from HIV-related complications. She's also a comedian and podcaster, and doesn't resemble Nellie much in neither personality nor appearance. In December 2025, at age 63, she was photographed in LA wearing a choppy dark-blond pixie hairstyle, looking full of life.
