Pat Benatar And Neil Giraldo's Marriage Is A Rare Success Story In The World Of Rock 'N' Roll

There aren't many examples of successful marriages in the rock 'n' roll industry, but Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo defy the odds. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame duo met in 1978, quickly becoming professional and romantic partners that would go on to shift the genre's sound in the 1980s. "We started working together as musicians, and then one thing led to another," Giraldo told Woman's World in June 2025.

Benatar and Giraldo, her lead guitarist, married in 1982, and have released 11 studio albums to date. Giraldo has been credited for songwriting, arranging, producing, and background vocals across his wife's discography. "It's the only way we know how to do it. We've been together for 46 years," Benatar added. The "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" singer noted that part of what makes their relationship work is that Giraldo is genuinely a good person.

In 2025, the couple, who share two daughters and three grandchildren, spoke about their secrets for a long, successful union. "We've learned how to be quiet and still be in the same room together and not have to talk to one another, and that's good," Giraldo explained to People. The pair also revealed that they never go to bed angry with one another.

Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo's common values contribute to their success as partners

As Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo promoted their 2025 book, "My Grandma and Grandpa Rock!," it became clear that their shared values serve as a strong foundation for their relationship. The rock couple spoke with Grand about what inspired them to write a children's book celebrating familial love and diversity. "One day Stevie asked if all grandparents go on tour buses," Benatar said, recalling a conversation with her young granddaughter. "I explained that there are so many kinds of grandparents, and the one thing they all have in common is love for their grandchildren. That conversation became the heart of the book." Giraldo, who deems himself a grandpa who prioritizes fun and teachable moments, explained, "I loved telling made-up stories to our kids every night — always with turmoil, always ending well."

Benatar noted how admiration and embracing each others differences contributes to her and Giraldo's successful relationship. "We started as each other's muse, in love as players first, and built from there," she explained. "We're completely different personalities — he's easygoing, I'm not — but it works." Rock stars who haven't been quite as lucky in love include Mick Jagger and 1970s fashion icon Bianca Jagger, who were married from 1971 to 1978. Stevie Nicks, whose pics highlight her iconic '70s style, had a tumultuous relationship with bandmate Lindsey Buckingham before they split in 1976. And Gwen Stefani, a celebrity who drastically changed their hair after a breakup, divorced Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale in 2016.
