'80s Actor Mia Sara Has Aged Like Fine Wine Since Her Ferris Bueller's Day Off Era

If you've ever seen the iconic '80s comedy film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," you'll recognize Mia Sara. The actor portrayed Sloane Peterson, Ferris Bueller's girlfriend in the movie. Before then, she was a teen star on the soap opera "All My Children." While Sara has largely stayed out of the spotlight in the years following "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," only appearing in small roles over the years, she attended a screening of "The Life of Chuck" in 2025 — showing just how much she's grown since her days as an '80s up-and-comer.

As a young star in the '80s and '90s, Sara maintained an understated, girl-next-door vibe with medium length brown hair and a fresh face. Now, like iconic '80s actor Phoebe Cates, she is nearly unrecognizable decades later. Sara has cut her hair into a stylish bixie cut – one of the best low-maintenance haircuts for women over 30. Like other women in and around Hollywood, Sara lets her gray hair show freely; which makes for a stunning look that highlights how much the star has changed over the years. 

Since her role in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," Mia Sara has largely stepped out of the spotlight. While the actor has made appearances in films, television shows, and on red carpets periodically over the years — giving us a glimpse of her fabulous gray hair transformation — she hasn't gone on to enjoy the same level of fame as her "Ferris Bueller" co-star Matthew Broderick. In a rare interview with The Sunday Times in June 2026, Sara explained that filming the hit movie "was not that good an experience for me."

"I never really had the resilience to deal with the audition process," she shared. "There are some things in my career that I'm really proud of, but overall it was not a happy career for me," Sara told the outlet, going on to say that her poor working relationship with director John Hughes put a damper on the experience. "But I'm very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don't want to disappoint people. But I didn't get along well with John," she revealed. Even though the former '80s star has taken a large step back from the acting world, she made her re-entrance into Hollywood in 2025 with "The Life of Chuck." Her appearance at the red carpet premiere (during which she debuted her stunning silver locks and glowing complexion) was her first in over a decade.
