Before & After Pics Of '80s Celebs Who Underwent Weight-Loss Journeys

Some of the world's biggest icons who rose to fame in the '80s seem almost untouched by time. While stars like Madonna and Cher have maintained their signature appearances that helped them garner attention decades ago, others look dramatically different, especially after embarking on weight-loss journeys years later. As the fitness boom of the 1980s inspired people everywhere to prioritize wellness and movement at home, it's no surprise that some celebrities who rose to fame during the fitness-focused era have been recognized for their transformations over time. Some of the most famous actors from the '80s are practically unrecognizable after experiencing remarkable physical changes years later.

As stars like Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg have continued to make headlines for their noticeable transformations, it's clear celebrities from the '80s are still just as relevant today as they were back then, with many influencing fashion, music, and celebrity culture. Decades later, their journeys continue to generate interest and admiration, proving that the world's fascination with celebrity transformations is far from over. While some celebrities incorporated at-home workouts into their routines and adapted their diets to lose weight, others embraced medical procedures to help them with the weight loss process. Before-and-after photographs of these celebrities highlight just how much they have changed since they first found fame.

Chaka Khan started with a liquid diet

Chaka Khan is a singer-songwriter who hit it big in the 1970s as the lead singer of funk band Rufus. She's a philanthropist and activist who regularly weaves her beliefs into her music to empower women, which makes her a fan favorite. Another way Khan empowers others is by being transparent about her weight-loss journey.

In 2012, the singer-songwriter addressed her noticeable 60-pound weight loss on "The Wendy Williams Show." "When I first started last year, for two months, two whole months, I didn't chew a thing," she said, regarding her method. "I drank and I exercised," Khan added, explaining that she also follows a vegan diet.

Oprah Winfrey went on weight-loss meds

Oprah Winfrey rose to fame in the 1980s as a media mogul. She is best known for hosting "The Oprah Winfrey Show," where she has been transparent about her weight-loss battle. In a 2023 interview with People, Winfrey admitted to using doctor-prescribed weight-loss medication.

While her knee surgery in 2021 prompted her to stop her unhealthy habits and alter her diet, Winfrey said it was the medication that helped her make lasting changes. "The fact that there's a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift," she said on the interview.

Janet Jackson trained hard following her pregnancy in 2017

Janet Jackson revolutionized the music industry in the 1980s with hits like "Nasty" and "Rhythm Nation," but the talented singer has made headlines for more than her music. The singer also garnered attention in 2017 when she lost 70 pounds just months after having her first child. How did she do it?

Paulette Sybliss, Jackson's personal trainer, told E! News on 2017 that the singer paid particular attention to her exercise routine as a way to lose weight. Jackson returned to an intense training schedule just six weeks after giving birth. "We were training a minimum of four times a week, and the sessions were never less than 45 minutes," Sybliss said.

Dolly Parton only does junk food on the weekends

In the 1980s, country singer Dolly Parton took home the Song of the Year Grammy Award for the country anthem "9 to 5" and opened her Dollywood theme park. Parton has had an iconic evolution over the years, but it hasn't come without some struggles, especially regarding her body image and numerous diets.

"I'm a hog at heart. I've been up and down with my weight through the years," she told People in 2018. While her weight has fluctuated, Parton has finally discovered a diet she can maintain. She follows a low-carb diet during the week and only eats junk food on weekends. This balance seems to work perfectly: No one can deny that Parton has been looking her best for a while now.

Kirstie Alley joined a personalized nutrition company

Actor Kirstie Alley garnered attention in 1982 when she was cast in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." She later got her big break when she took on the role of Rebecca Howe in the NBC sitcom "Cheers" in 1987. Since then, she has been in dozens of films and TV shows, living a life constantly in the spotlight.

Throughout her career, Alley publicly addressed her fluctuating physique with compulsive eating as one of her biggest issues. After toxic media culture targeted her body and weight, Alley decided to embark on a weight-loss journey in 2004 and agreed to partner with personalized nutrition company Jenny Craig. In 2005, Alley said it only took her four months to lose 33 pounds with Craig. In 2015, she reiterated her success by losing 50 pounds under the same program.

Whoopi Goldberg swears by Mounjaro

Actor Whoopi Goldberg secured her first major role in 1985 when she took on the role of Celie in "The Color Purple." She soon became a Hollywood star. Goldberg may be recognized for her film career, but her name has started to be associated with something entirely different: the weight-loss medication known as Mounjaro.

Goldberg, who previously said she weighed 300 pounds, admitted in 2024 to taking the medication, which is commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, as part of her weight-loss journey. While other celebs have been clear about not taking Ozempic or other weight-loss drugs, Goldberg embraced them. The "Sister Act" star decided on the medication after a steroidal treatment caused a sudden weight spike following an injury.
