Lady Gaga's Signature Blond Locks Look Even Better Than Her Natural Hair Color
Lady Gaga is one celebrity who proves the benefits of ditching your natural hair color for one with more standout appeal. Though the Grammy-winning singer is known for her signature platinum blond tresses — often central in many of Lady Gaga's biggest fashion risks we'll never forget –, she was born with brown hair. She revealed this through childhood photos she shared on an episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter".
Photos of Gaga during the early years of her music career also show the "Just Dance" singer donning her natural brunette locks (via Popsugar). By the time she made her big break in 2009, she decided to make a statement with platinum blond wigs and hairstyles that differentiated her from her peers and proved she was here to stay.
Throughout her thriving career across music and film, Lady Gaga has made her hair a huge part of her image, even penning a song titled "Hair" which includes the lyrics, "I'll die living as free as my hair." When opening up about the track's inspiration on a 2011 video for her YouTube channel, Gaga recalled being forced by her parents to brush her hair before leaving the house. Additionally, since she had to wear a school uniform as a youngling, the "Born This Way" singer started to see her hair as her identity, so she started paying special attention to it. Gaga used "Hair" to explain her love for wigs, hair dyes, and different hairstyles. With eyebrows also falling into the hair category, that might explain Lady Gaga's eyebrow transformation over the years.
Lady Gaga revealed why she loves wigs and make up
Many might see Lady Gaga's love for art and creative expression as the cause behind her ever-evolving hairstyles and looks. Between her frequent hairstyle changes and even the times Gaga went makeup-free and looked stunning, the singer always keeps the fashion police on their toes. But the "Bad Romance" singer got candid during her performance at the 2014 iTunes Festival in London, where she hit the stage wearing her natural hair (via Grazia Daily). It was while performing the song "Sex Dreams" that Gaga addressed her natural hair and encouraged her fans to do the same. "I knew I had to show you what's underneath all of the theatre," she said. Getting even more candid, the singer revealed that it had been "some really tough times" she endured that led to her using "wigs and make-up to cover up the pain." According to the "Applause" singer, "when I didn't feel strong enough to be me, I created someone else. And it worked."
With all the attention around her hair, Lady Gaga has never shied away from giving credit to her longtime hairstylist Frederic Aspiras. She celebrated him through a heartfelt speech at the 2019 Daily Front Row's Fashion Awards, where Aspiras won Hair Artist of the Year. In 2025, Gaga played at Aspiras' hometown, San Francisco, where she dedicated her performance to the talented hairstylist and his mother — who taught him how to do hair. Before her performance, Gaga told her fans she felt the need to talk about Aspiras and "the way he watched his mother roll her hair and teach him how to be brave." The "Venus" singer added that Aspiras inspires her to be herself every day (via Very Asian). Considering Gaga's love for hair and the many ways she can style it, it makes sense she has such a powerful bond with the man that helps her keep exploring her artistic freedom through her looks.
