Sofía Vergara's Natural Hair Color Isn't The Dark Brunette She's Known For

For years, Sofía Vergara has been instantly synonymous with her voluminous brunette hair, a hue that has become just as much a part of her image as her quick wit and glamorous red-carpet looks. But despite spending most of her time on our screens with dark locks, the actor is actually a natural blond — a fact that caught fans off guard, as they're more accustomed to seeing celebrities go from brunette to blond, not the other way around.

In 2022, the "Modern Family" star posted a throwback photo on Instagram from Carnival, where the actor sported her natural light golden hair. She is just one of many celebs who are nearly unrecognizable with their natural hair color, and the nostalgic throwback was a reminder that while Vergara may be associated with her brown hair, blond is where her story truly began — and Vergara underwent the style transformation for a good reason.

Sofía Vergara changed her hair color to change her career

While Sofía Vergara looks flawless, even without makeup, casting directors weren't sold on her look. When Vergara moved to the U.S. from Colombia in her early 30s, she quickly realized she didn't fit Hollywood's narrow expectations of what a South American actress should look like. "They were expecting a darker-haired woman. It was difficult because they were a little confused, like, 'This woman sounds like a Latin woman, but she's blonde,'" she told People in 2024. Rather than continue facing the same roadblock at auditions, Vergara made the difficult decision to dye her hair. Looking back, she admitted it wasn't an easy choice, but it was one she felt was necessary to break into the industry. "At the end of the day, it was hair. It was not like I was cutting my fingers off."

After undergoing her hair transformation, she began booking gigs before securing her breakout role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC's "Modern Family." The show garnered 85 Emmy nominations and 22 wins, catapulting Vergara into mainstream success as one of TV's most recognizable stars, which led her to want to go back to having lighter hair. "After the third season, I thought, 'Maybe now that everybody knows Gloria is Latin and they know me, I could go back to my more natural hair color.' So I did little by little, and it was fine," she recalled. So, while brunette hair may have helped launch her career, blond has always been the color that feels most like her.
