Madonna Has Rocked So Many Hair Trends Over The Years

Madonna was the popstar blueprint of the '80s. Known as the Queen of Pop, she could scandalize crowds with her pointy bras and sexy hits like "Like a Virgin." Being a pop star comes with a huge amount of cultural influence, and Madonna made big beauty statements with hers. Although Madonna had many best-dressed moments in the '80s, her hair was just as interesting as her fashion — and she never stopped switching it up over the decades.

The "Material Girl" singer has rocked super-short hair and long, curly strands in her iconic blond and other colors. She's had messy cuts and glamorous styles and everything in between, creating hairstyle inspiration no matter what type of look you're going for.

In a January 2004 interview with Oprah, Madonna revealed that her changing styles represent something internally. "My physical transformations — like changing my hair — are usually a reflection of what's inspiring me at the moment," she shared. "The change starts inward and moves outward." She's certainly undergone a lot of transformations over the years based on the many beautiful hair trends that she's made her own.

Madonna had brunette hair in a lob cut in 1985

When Madonna performed at Live Aid in 1985, her hair looked different than you might expect from the blond bombshell: It was a short brunette lob! Her hair was naturally wavy and parted to one side, with a cut that hit right at her shoulders and was a little longer than a traditional bob. Her gold hoop earrings made her hair stand out even more as she sang, dressed in a cool silver jacket, vest, and tons of gold necklaces.

Madonna's blond pixie cut in 1986

When filming the music video for "Papa Don't Preach" in 1986, Madonna rocked a super-short pixie cut. Her blond hair was tousled, with her bangs styled messily to the side and just touching her eyebrows. She smiled in a black leather jacket with a popped collar in this photo, which was the perfect complement for her hair. Maybe it's her tough-girl persona or just the shape of her face, but this daring cut looks absolutely gorgeous on her (as if we'd expect anything less from Madonna!).

Madonna's 1987 glamorous curly bob

At the 1987 American Music Awards, Madonna channeled Old Hollywood glam with her expertly curled bob. She looked classy and elegant with her blond hair cut into a bob and styled with perfectly spaced and voluminous curls. Her black eyeliner, dark brown eyebrows, and ruby red lips were exactly the rights elements to highlight the dramatic look. Who else could go so easily from a messy pixie cut to perfectly styled curls in just one year?

Madonna had short bleached tresses in 1989

Madonna continued to wear her hair short for a while, leading to this cute cropped look in 1989. Her frosted strands were styled in an artfully disheveled way, complete with wispy pieces on top and bangs that grew wild. The face-framing 'do was both sexy and fun, and proved how versatile the singer was when it came to switching up her look. Madonna's dark eye makeup and bright red lipstick completed the stunning style.

Madonna's famous blond ponytail in 1990

Perhaps Madonna's most famous hairstyle ever was the high ponytail she rocked during her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990. That's right, Madonna wore a high pony way before Ariana Grande did, complete with long blond hair, bouncy ends, and a matching braided ponytail holder that was wound around at the top of her crown. The juxtaposition of the full ponytail with her slicked back front pieces made a bold choice that is still iconic decades later.

Madonna's black hair in 1999 was due to her obsession with geishas

Madonna revealed in her 2004 interview with Oprah that she dyed her hair black after reading a book. "I went through a whole period when I was obsessed with geishas, because I'd read that amazing book 'Memoirs of a Geisha,'" she revealed. "I dyed my hair black and had a geisha outfit made for myself for a video." In this photo from the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in 2000, Madonna wore the same red kimono she wore in the music video for her 1999 hit, "Nothing Really Matters," to perform the song live.

Madonna's 2007 switch-up featured straight layers with side-swept bangs

Short, choppy layers with stick-straight hair was a popular style in 2007, so it's no wonder Madonna rocked this look that year, too. In a photo taken during the launch of her H&M clothing line, M by Madonna, in London Madonna fully embodied this hairstyle with her shoulder-length, honey-blond hair. From the perfectly chopped layers to the side-swept swooshy bangs, Madonna's hair was what every girl dreamed of during this time period.

Madonna's 2022 straight red hair

When Madonna attended New York Fashion Week in 2022 with daughter Lourdes Leon, she wore an unusual hair color: strawberry blond! Her red-tinted hair was worn long, falling to just over her bust. She held it away from her eyes with a black headband that matched her black outfit. A sparkling diamond necklace and black ribbon choker, plus fingerless black gloves and silver jewelry, added some pizzazz to the style, which wouldn't have stood out as much without the copper hair shade. This color looks so good with her skin, it's a wonder she didn't keep it for long.

Madonna's 2026 Met Gala wig was ultra long and sculptural

At the 2026 Met Gala," Madonna went back to her dark hair with this over-the-top wig from artisan wigmaker Merria Dearman, plus a pirate ship-inspired hat with silk sails, put together by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, per InStyle. "Madonna saw a wig I had created on set and said, simply, 'I need that wig,'" Dearman told the outlet, adding that the wig was "extremely long, full, and rich in texture. A deep, natural brown, not black, with ends that softened and diffused like hair that has grown untouched for years."

Madonna's low-maintenance curls in 2026

When Madonna performed in Times Square in June 2026, she wore her blond, medium-length hair in loose waves that seemed less intentional than her perfectly bouncy curls of the past. In this photo, Madonna's hair is parted in the middle and looks more relaxed than many of her past styles, showing how she seems to be embracing an easier, yet still pretty look. It shows she is totally down for low-maintenance hairstyles that look great on women over 60.
