Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries brought her more than just infamy for having one of Hollywood's shortest marriages. The two-month relationship saw the reality star and business mogul connect with her late grandmother MJ Houghton in one of the most unusual ways. Years after her divorce from Humphries was finalized in 2013, Kardashian opened up about how her grandmother related to the short-lived relationship.
"We have a lot in common. We both got married for two months once," Kardashian said in a since-removed video shared on her app (via E! News). Houghton agreed with her granddaughter, saying Kardashian's two-month marriage saw how "history repeats itself" in their family. While the marriage was short and nothing like the relationship trend exemplified by Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, Houghton had a different experience and reason for ending her marriage so quickly.
"I can't believe it because I was married for two months at 18. Right out of high school I was given an engagement ring, a guy I had been going with for four years. And then I just thought, 'You know what? This isn't really that much fun,' so I got out of it." Houghton said. The experience left Houghton with a newfound outlook on marriage and divorce. "Once you got married you realized it. 'What did I do?' And you try to stay in there for a month or so and really try hard and you just can't. You think, 'I shouldn't waste his time,'" she said. It's a perspective the SKIMS founder likely related to, as Kim Kardashian's post-divorce style transformation helped her reclaim her independence.
Kim Kardashian learned a lot from her beloved grandmother
Kim Kardashian simply adored her grandma MJ Houghton and never shied away from showing it. On the heels of an episode of "The Kardashians" that showed Houghton celebrating her 90th birthday, Kardashian took to Instagram to share a sweet snap with her grandmother. "No one cuter than my grandma MJ," Kardashian captioned a photo of the two matching in all-black looks. Kardashian smiled at the camera while Houghton looked to her granddaughter and blew her a kiss.
Kardashian also shared a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother with an Instagram carousel showing three generations of the family. "I don't know what I would do without you grandma. We have the best memories that [are] burnt into my soul forever!" Kardashian captioned the post. The pics featured Kardashian posing alongside her mom, Kris Jenner, and Houghton, showcasing how elegance and beauty have carried on in the family tree. And it continues, given that now Kim Kardashian's daughter North West has cultivated a style all her own.
It seems as though Kardashian looked up to Houghton, and seeing her achieve success was influential to the reality star. "You really have been the best example of strength and independence. Seeing you start a business and run your store has been so inspirational!" she continued in her Instagram caption. "But seeing you beat cancer twice without any complaints and showing us what it takes to fight has set the tone for all of us and our outlook on life."
