What The Leading Ladies Of Netflix's Little House On The Prairie Look Like In Real Life

"Little House on the Prairie" is one of the most beloved book and television series in the world. Since Laura Ingalls Wilder published the first book in 1932, audiences across generations have been charmed by the writer's portrayal of late 1800s frontier life. Just over four decades after the book series began, it was adapted into a television show for NBC in 1974 — which became wildly popular and remains culturally relevant to this day. 

In 2026, Netflix released its own reimagining of the franchise, one that is described as more book-accurate than the first television series. With a cast of mostly lesser-known actors, the streaming service is taking on a difficult challenge — creating something new whilst tempering the expectations of fans of the 1970s "Little House" show. 

Given the period-accurate clothing, makeup, and hair, the actors in the new television series have to transform (at least a little) to fit into the rural 1800s setting. While we know what the leading ladies of the 1970s "Little House on the Prairie" show look like now, we wanted to see what the new cast of women look like when they're off-set. The Netflix "Little House" series has been well-received by critics — not to mention it's already renewed for a second season — in large part due to the hard work and talent of the leading ladies. From the youngest members of the cast to the most seasoned, the women of "Little House on the Prairie" truly threw themselves into their respective roles fully. Just as we've gotten to see the original Laura Ingalls actor, Melissa Gilbert's complete transformation over the years, we hope to get to see these ladies' evolution as the series progresses.

Crosby Fitzgerald has taken on the iconic role of Caroline, or "Ma," Ingalls. As Caroline, Fitzgerald is the picture of a sensible, late 1800s mother. She appears bare-faced (though makeup head Calla Syna Dreyer explained to Tudum in 2026 that the no-makeup look is achieved via sheer layers for "sculpting and shading to bring out features"), and her red waves are either pulled into a neat bun or hang loose around her face. In her real life, Fitzgerald is still a stunning redhead, though she embraces a sleeker and more modern look. While attending the premiere of her film "Crime 101" in February 2026, Fitzgerald wore her long hair in smooth waves that cascaded down her back. While she wore minimal makeup, Fitzgerald used dark mascara and false lashes (two things Ma Ingalls never would) to make her blue eyes pop. 

Fitzgerald was initially hesitant about taking on the iconic role of Caroline Ingalls. The actor told People in 2026 that, as a fan of the original "Little House on the Prairie" books, she was unsure she could portray the Ingalls' matriarch accurately. "I consider myself sort of brash and loud and annoying, and she's so poised and elegant, from what I remember from the books," Fitzgerald said. "Then I read the script, and I was like, oh my God, I really am in love with this person." 

While Fitzgerald was uncertain, her co-stars knew that she was the right pick for Caroline from the very beginning. Luke Bracey, the actor who portrays Charles "Pa" Ingalls, told the publication that he "really wanted it to be her" after their chemistry reading. "We became fast, fast friends and really fantastic teammates," Bracey said. "I couldn't ask for a better Caroline."

Alice Halsey may be very young, but she's quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in the acting world. Halsey is the 11-year-old actor who portrays Laura Ingalls in the Netflix adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's iconic book series "Little House on the Prairie." As Laura, Halsey wears her brown curls in two braids — a practical choice for the frontier. But, in her real life, the young actor wears her hair loose, embracing a preppier style than the 1800s-era youth she portrays on the show. 

The books are a semi-autobiographical work about Wilder's experience as a child on the American frontier; while she took creative liberties with some of the stories, Wilder "always tried to be true to her memories" during the writing process (per Caroline Fraser, the author of Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, in an interview with Iowa Source). Nevertheless, taking on the role of Laura herself is a massive undertaking, one that Halsey took in stride. 

The Emmy-nominated young actor went the extra mile when preparing for the role, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2026 that she listened to podcasts and read books about life in the 19th century to get a sense of what Laura's life would have been like — she even understands the cultural impact of the "Little House on the Prairie" books and 1970s television adaptation. "It's a story that's been beloved to so many people over generations and generations. Part of it is because of Laura's words and Laura's tale, but also it's relatable in every time," Halsey said. "No matter what year it is, no matter what's going on at that time, there's always something in 'Little House' that's a comfort and relatable to what you're experiencing."

As one of the two child actors leading Netflix's "Little House on the Prairie," Skywalker Hughes faced a lot of pressure to live up to the legacy of Melissa Sue Anderson, who portrayed Mary Ingalls in the 1970s adaptation. Hughes is a newcomer to the industry, with her biggest project prior to her taking on the role of Mary being in the series "Joe Pickett" in 2021. Nevertheless, the 14-year-old newcomer proved that she has the skill to stand next to more seasoned professionals. As Mary Ingalls, Hughes wears her light brown hair in a messy braid, perfectly befitting a teen in the 1800s. In real life, the young actor transforms into the prototypical late Gen-Z youth with trendy clothes and long, styled hair. 

During an interview with Deadline in 2026, Hughes revealed that she found a lot of common ground with the character of Mary, as she's an older sister herself. "Honestly, I kind of took how I feel towards responsibility for my siblings and all of that stuff, put it into the context of Mary's personality and how Mary looks at the world and did my best to go from that," Hughes said. With passionate young actors like Hughes and Alice Halsey as the heart of Netflix's "Little House on the Prairie," it's safe to say that the series is off to a good start. 

For Boomers and Gen Xers who were fans of the original "Little House on the Prairie" television series, Barrett Doss' character Emily Henderson is new. Emily, the kind owner of the general store in the Netflix adaptation, was not a character in the previous TV iteration. However, Doss has taken this new character and truly made her a fan-favorite. As Henderson, Doss looks every bit the charming, generous, yet independent (by 1800s standards) character she's meant to portray. Like Caroline Ingalls, her hair is typically tied back into a practical updo — perfect for a busy general store owner. 

But, in real life, Doss is stylish and on-trend; one look at her Instagram account shows that the actor switches up her look frequently, always stunning in hair looks that range from short curls to long braids and straight bobs. Unlike celebs who rarely let their curly natural hair out to play, Doss often flaunts her dark brown curls flawlessly. Doss can rock just about any look, and completely blends into her role in the period show. While Emily isn't an OG show character, her existence is quite important to the Netflix series' more historically accurate setting and overall message about the social complexities of the era; people of color were on the frontier and helped shape the culture and landscape of that area of the country — they also faced unique challenges and hardships while doing so. Doss' earnest portrayal of Emily supports that message wholeheartedly. 

Mary Holland took on the role of Jemma James, who seems to be Netflix's answer to Harriet Oleson from the original "Little House on the Prairie" series. As a comedian, Holland is the perfect pick for the smug, traditionalist Jemma, who, alongside influential husband Eli, serves as a sort of community leader for the women in the Independence settlement. Jemma's friendship with Caroline Ingalls provides further character development, and Jemma's snobbish attitude begins to change as a result of Caroline's influence.

Holland underwent one of the biggest transformations out of the "Little House on the Prairie" leading ladies. As Jemma, Holland is clad in billowy era-appropriate dresses, with elaborately styled hair (indicative of her status in the town) and a prim smile. But, in her day-to-day life, Holland is far more easy-going. Her dark brown hair is much shorter in real life, and the actor now wears it in a trendy shoulder-grazing bob. Holland throws herself into her roles wholeheartedly, as we've seen through her vastly different roles in projects like "Ghosts," "Nightbitch," and "Senior Year." Holland may not be as campy as the love-to-hate Harriet from the OG series, but she's established herself as a comedic force in the new series nonetheless.
