A 1978 Little House On The Prairie Episode Accidentally Featured A Too-Modern Beauty Look
Though "Little House on the Prairie" is one of the most beloved period television shows of all time, it had it's fair share of historical inaccuracy — particularly in the costuming. Most of the outfits aligned decently well with the late 1880s, but a few of the younger girls' dresses had shorter hemlines than they would have in real life. More glaringly, some of the women on the cast sported perfect manicures, which they certainly wouldn't have had access to on the frontier. In one of the most infamous gaffes, Melissa Sue Anderson (who portrayed the Ingalls family's eldest daughter Mary) accidentally showcased her acrylic nails during season 5, episode 9, titled "The Wedding." While accepting a marriage proposal, Mary embraces Adam Kendall — and in the process reveals her almond-shaped French tips.
However, nails aren't the only modern thing eagle-eyed fans of the series have noticed about the leading ladies' on-screen glam. Reddit users have pointed out how heavy Laura Ingalls' eye makeup became in the later seasons, with plenty of dark eyeliner, mascara, and even blue eyeshadow. While frosty blue eyeshadow is one of the makeup products you'd need for a believable Y2K beauty look, it's not exactly on the shortlist of items that would be available in a rural prairie town in the 19th century. Even if the series had some beauty moments that were more appropriate for the 1980s than the 1880s, comparing side-by-side pictures of the 2026 and 1970s casts of "Little House on the Prairie" shows that the series is still erring on the side of modern when it comes to the main ensemble's glam.
Nellie Oleson avoided nail polish or acrylic nails while filming for historical accuracy
We've gotten to see what Nellie Oleson from "Little House on the Prairie" looks like today thanks to actor Alison Arngrim's continued presence in the fan community, as well as hear some insight on the beloved series from her point of view. On a November 2025 episode of the "Little House on the Prairie" 50th anniversary podcast, Arngrim recapped season 5's "The Wedding" with host Pamela Bob and former co-star Dean Butler. During their discussion, Butler pointed out Mary Ingalls' (portrayed by Melissa Sue Anderson) flawless French-tipped manicure during the iconic proposal scene.
Arngrim jumped in to explain that she chose not to get her nails professionally done while filming to avoid such glaring issues. "I did not have any sort of acrylics during the show. I would often on the weekend paint my nails many interesting colors. I was going to punk [them] up black half the time. But Sunday night, I would [go in] with the makeup remover," Arngrim said. "Melissa Gilbert had the acrylics, Melissa Sue [Anderson] had the acrylics, they all had the French tips — it was so in the early '80s — and I did not." The actor went on to cite her seven-year contract on a show set in the 1800s as the reason why she was so dedicated to historical accuracy for her character.
