'80s Pop Star Lisa Velez Is Still Rocking The Stage & Red Carpet Today

'80s pop singer Lisa Velez is one of those musicians we simply can't get out of our heads. Just as she has asked her audiences, "Can You Feel the Beat?" we, too, have wondered if the artist, better known to the public as Lisa Lisa, is still out there spreading her gifts to the world. Thankfully, she's still giving her all to "Let the Beat Hit 'Em." Like some other famous '80s musicians who are practically unrecognizable now, you may be surprised to see what Velez looks like these days. She let her Latina flag fly with full confidence for the 38th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards in September 2025, where the singer ditched her voluminous mullet (an '80s hairstyle that celebs are still rocking today) for a simple, straightened 'do. Her red blouse featured winged-out shoulder pads, which she perhaps wore to tell fans she's still flying high in life.

Velez has also graced the stage for various engagements over the years, including a performance at the V101 Freestyle Explosion Throwback Jam in March 2022. She brought out all the charm with her all-black ensemble, which included ripped leather pants, a bustier top, and a studded leather jacket, with dark sunglasses to top off the look. Even her jet-black hair (the glossiest trend at the moment) proved she's yet to lose the cool factor she developed back in the day.

Lisa Velez is truly unstoppable

Lisa Velez may be best recognized for the joyous, upbeat attitude conveyed by her memorable songs and energetic stage presence. However, some fans may not know the beloved pop star battled personal problems offstage. The "I Wonder If I Take You Home" singer was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 21 years old — a reality she labored to keep to herself. "It was hard to talk about back then," she revealed on "The Tamron Hall Show" in 2024. "My mom didn't even know — rest her soul — I had to hide it." The pop star underwent chemotherapy in secret while finishing out a nine-month tour, and thankfully, the cancer went into remission.

Despite her struggles, Velez is still chugging along at a fine speed and making music today. Fans may be "Lost in Emotion" knowing she hasn't let her diagnosis, nor the ever-changing musical world, stop her from sharing her talents. She even kicked off her 40th anniversary tour in 2025. "I never stopped performing," she told People in January 2025. "Music changes and fame goes up and down for everybody, but I never stopped. You've got to keep moving." If you aren't already "All Cried Out," perhaps learning more about her continuous tale of perseverance, as seen in the 2025 Lifetime biopic (starring Velez as her own mother) "Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story," could also get the waterworks going.
