Minnie Driver's 1998 Oscars Look Stunned, But It Was Nearly A Fashion Fail Behind The Scenes

The Oscars are an annual celebration, not only of accomplishments in the film industry, but also celebrity fashion. Though every ceremony is chock-full of stars dressed to the nines with extravagant outfits the average television viewer could only dream of wearing, they aren't without instances of unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions. "Good Will Hunting" star Minnie Driver, for example, arrived on the scene for the Academy Awards in 1998 in an eye-catching ensemble that kept her off the worst-dressed lists. However, her struggles to keep things together off-screen ultimately made this Oscars look a fashion fail.

Driver sported a dazzling ruby bracelet with "hundreds" of sparkling beads that perhaps could have outshone the award show's coveted golden trophies. She recounted on "The Tonight Show" in 2026 that all was well until she applauded her "Good Will Hunting" co-star Robin Williams for winning Best Supporting Actor, at which point the bracelet broke, and the beads went flying. Driver at least had help salvaging what was left of her bracelet. "I'm not kidding you, James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger got down on their hands and knees and found [the beads]," she revealed.

Unfortunately, the bracelet wasn't Driver's only outfit mishap that night. The actor explained on "The Jennifer Hudson Show" in 2024 that she had some serious trouble with the fit of her red Halston dress. "I'd lost too much weight before I went to the Oscars," she said. "The dress fell off, and in that moment I had this wrap, and I just pulled the wrap around me and kind of carried on smiling." Though Driver struggled with her outfit, she still rocked the sleek ensemble and was nowhere near one of the worst-dressed celebs in Oscars history.

Minnie Driver has since experienced red carpet redemption

Although Minnie Driver's infamous Halston dress had its flaws, it was a gorgeous look that deserved more attention than the technical troubles she had with it. Despite the embarrassment she experienced at the 1998 Academy Awards, "The Phantom of the Opera" star has clearly put the night behind her, and since then Minnie Driver has had many knockout red carpet moments in her 50s alone. These days, the actor seems to have no problem pulling off stunning looks without incident.

Driver shined brighter than any Oscars statuette in the gold-sequined dress she flaunted at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2024. Her lustrous complexion, beaming smile, and starlike earrings added even more shine to her trophy-coded look.

Not long after her 50th birthday, Driver showed that she hasn't lost her sex appeal when she arrived looking like a top model at an event in February 2020. She hit the red carpet confidently in a slinky black dress with a cropped top and sheer panel at the chest, which just screamed, "How do you like them apples?" Though the ill-fated Oscars ensemble from Minnie Driver's 1998 awards show season looks may still sit at the back of her mind, we'd argue her present-day red carpet wins signal the ultimate redemption arc.
