Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern Has Had A Stunning Hair Transformation

It's no secret that actor Elizabeth McGovern has embarked on a stunning gray hair transformation that has seen her emerge as one of the industry's most talked-about figures. But, long before she got to embracing her natural silver strands, McGovern donned a range of hairstyles. From shags and bobs to curls and lobs, the actor has proudly proven she can rock almost any 'do.  

After earning an Academy Award nomination for her second film, "Ragtime," it was clear McGovern had what it took to make a profound impact. McGovern has secured roles in some legendary titles — including Sergio Leone's cinematic masterpiece "Once Upon a Time in America." While her image may have been adapted to suit her various roles, McGovern sure did have control over her hair. The actor embraced the aesthetic of each decade with a different style, adding some volume in the '80s and refining her look by the early 2000s. 

In recent years, McGovern has become best recognized for her starring role as Lady Cora Crawley on the British historical drama "Downton Abbey." The series first launched back in 2010, and eventually came to an end in 2015. With the show's end, McGovern was finally able to put her regal Edwardian-era image behind her and reinvent herself for good. Of course, embracing her naturally silver locks was the best way to do it. Yes, McGovern's hair transformation has taken its time, but it's fair to say her final look (and attitude) has blown us away.

After making her film debut in 1980 and earning an Academy Award nomination for her second ever film, Elizabeth McGovern started to become a familiar face on the red carpet. A year after she received her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for "Ragtime," McGovern appeared at the 1983 Academy Awards wearing a ribbed light-blue shift dress and a flapper-inspired, long beaded necklace. She topped her '20s-esque ensemble with a classic '80s rounded bob.

Full yet softly feathered volume was a major hair fad during the start of the decade, long before the era became characterized by teased haircuts. Her glamorous hairstyle featured a side-swept fringe that extended into a delicate flick. By completing her look with heavy pink blush on her cheeks, McGovern hinted that she was well on her way to embracing more of the decade's aesthetics.

Lo and behold, by 1988 McGovern was proudly sporting a voluminous curly mane. In true '80s style, a decade defined by a "larger-than-life" attitude, her big hair was the focal point of her look. When the actor posed for a portrait wearing a navy blue shirt, her dark ensemble hardly mattered beside her spectacularly frizzy curls that fell to her shoulders. As her tight ringlets formed a heavy fringe that framed her face and draped across her forehead, the actor looked as if she could be leaning more toward a typical '80s shag haircut.

Elizabeth McGovern added some choppy bangs to her look in the '90s. Pictured alongside fellow actor Keith Carradine at an event in 1990, McGovern drew attention to her trendy fringe by clipping her hair up. While every era has had its fair share of bangs, '90s styles delivered a specific look. "Bangs in the '90s were worn almost as an accessory," hairstylist Justin Toves-Vincilione told InStyle. "They were part of the haircut, but they weren't the focal point—they were there, but they were more of a whisper, while the makeup, hairstyle, and fashion were the shout." Since updos were also worn to exude the refined glamor that dominated the decade, McGovern clipping her hair up and keeping her tight curls away created an understated elegance.

Cut to the early 2000s, and McGovern had undeniably entered her refined era. Her ensemble at the ABC Family and Disney Channel Summer 2006 TCA Press Tour highlighted her understated approach to her appearance. The actor seamlessly swept her hair into a sleek bun with a deep side part that gave her look some subtle dimension. Her sweeping fringe only added to her elegance as it gently cascaded across her cheek. McGovern wore a minimalist black dress with soft eye makeup and a soft cherry-red lip gloss.

By the 2010s, Elizabeth McGovern's hair on "Downton Abbey" was almost always sculpted into sophisticated hairstyles that reflected women's style in the Edwardian period. While playing Lady Cora Crawley, the actor's hair was wrapped into a voluminous bouffant that featured soft waves and pin curls. In later seasons, as the series moved into the 1920s, she wore her hair in a sleeker style. In the series' final seasons and film adaptations of "Downton Abbey," McGovern's hair was shorter and appeared even more polished. Like her character, towards the end of the series, McGovern opted for a shorter and slicker style with her natural hair.

In 2015, McGovern celebrated the end of "Downton Abbey" at the BAFTA Awards. She posed on the red carpet wearing a glossy white minidress and with her dark brown hair styled in a neat lob. Her hair was tightly smoothed at the roots and looked as if no amount of breeze could knock a strand out of place. Split into a deep side part, McGovern donned a sleek side-swept fringe that cascaded over her eye. With her hair tucked behind her ears, it fell to her shoulders in soft waves.

Since research suggests that more than 50 percent of women actually try to hide their natural grays, it should be no surprise that it took Elizabeth McGovern years to finally embrace hers. Yet, in 2021, McGovern had clearly had enough. The actor was celebrating her 60th birthday with fellow "Downton Abbey" cast member Michelle Dockery in London when she was photographed donning a gray ombré hairstyle — one of the gray hair trends that make your locks look their best.

McGovern looked gorgeous as she made the dramatic decision to join the other celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair. In 2025, at 64 years old, the actor proved age is merely a number when it comes to fashion, and walked in the Burberry show at London Fashion Week. She strutted her stuff wearing a floor-length glossy black trench coat and her long gray hair on display for all to see. 

With "Downton Abbey" wrapped and her runway debut completed, the world sure was Elizabeth McGovern's oyster. Gray hair isn't the only statement she is making, and the actor has continued to emerge as quite the fashionista and a voice of reason. McGovern experimented with a bold blue blazer at the "Disclosure Day" premiere in London in 2026. She looked fierce, clad in the tailored number and oversized sunglasses, but it was her effortless embrace of gray hair that stole the show. At this point, it's fair to say McGovern has well and truly established herself as one of the celebrities who rocked 2026's most stunning gray hair trends.

Since going gray, McGovern has become even more of a pioneer in challenging ageism and empowering older women. Rather than simply addressing her own move to gray hair, the actor has challenged society's obsession with women growing out their silver strands. "I can't tell you how many times I'm interviewed, and the first question is about plastic surgery, or 'How do you feel about making a statement with your [gray] hair?'" McGovern told Tonic. "It's like, 'Would you ask a guy any of these questions? No!' No, there are other things. Life is full of other things," the actor added, acknowledging the double standards for women in the entertainment industry and beyond.
