Katharine Ross And Sam Elliott's Hollywood Love Story Has Stood The Test Of Time

Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott's love story isn't one that many expected to end happily ever after. Celebrity marriages, people on their fifth marriages, and relationships where both parties are in the same industry yet one is more vastly more popular, aren't exactly known to be successful. Yet Ross and Elliott have managed to defy all three of those odds to become one of the celebrity couples who have been married for over 30 years.

Ross and Elliott first met on the set of the 1969 movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," but didn't interact. "I didn't dare try to talk to her then," Elliott recalled to AARP in 2015. "She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene." Nine years later, however, they properly met. This time, on the set of "The Legacy" playing love interests, Elliott's role and work ethic were impossible to ignore. "He was very particular about the script and the dialogue and how things were said," Ross told PopCulture. "He was not afraid to speak up about what he thought."

Ross was still married to her fourth husband, Gaetano Lisi, at the time, while Elliott had never been married, but they began dating, and one year later, in 1979, Ross was divorced. Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott eventually married in 1984 and celebrated 40 years together in 2024. Interestingly, Elliott was offered the part in "Mask" while he and Ross were on their honeymoon, and he nearly turned it down. However, she insisted he take the role, which catapulted him to fame.

Marriages spanning four decades are rare in real life and even scarcer in Hollywood, so everyone is interested in Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott's secret. In 2018, the couple sat with The Oklahoman and shared some pieces of advice. According to Ross, it's all about tenacity: "You just ride the roller coaster –- and hang on tight." Elliott agreed. "I think the bottom line is you've gotta want to be married," he said. He also added that it's important for both parties to be in love and ready to put in the hard work. "Once you figure that out, I mean the rest of it is like Katharine said, it's riding the storm, basically."

In a separate interview with Ain't It Cool News in 2019, Sam Elliott spoke about his and Katharine Ross' gorgeous daughter Cleo and how she impacts their marriage. "When a kid gets born in a relationship, then as far as I'm concerned, that ices it. There's no getting out after that. I never wanted to get out." And we don't doubt it.
