The '80s-Inspired Dress Trend Making A Major Comeback For Fall 2026

The '80s are officially back. Many retro trends are no longer outdated in 2026; from old-school outfits to big hair, we're seeing the return of vintage vibes to mainstream fashion. This season, one of the 1980s' most popular dress silhouettes is making a comeback: the Basque waist. This silhouette is defined by its low waistline, which culminates in a V-shape at the middle of the waistband, and fitted corset-like top. In the '80s, many employed the glamorous silhouette for their over-the-top wedding gowns, while others wore Basque waist dresses as evening wear.  We spoke with Jordan Stolch, a personal stylist with MiKADO Personal Styling, to get some insight into the up-and-coming trend. According to Stolch, we're likely seeing Basque waist dresses come back into fashion because of 2026's widespread return to defined, "sculptural" silhouettes after relaxed shapes reigned supreme for a few seasons. "Though '80s inspired, today's interpretation doesn't feel overly costume-like and fits appropriately with current trends," Stolch tells Glam exclusively. "Designers are pairing the distinctive dropped, pointed waist with cleaner fabrics, streamlined styling, and more understated proportions, which makes the silhouette feel fresh and polished rather than retro." 

Because of the Basque waist's figure-hugging bodice and flared skirt, dresses in this silhouette are very feminine and dramatic. But the Basque waist is no longer constrained to evening attire for fall 2026, Stolch explains. "Today, designers are reinterpreting the Basque waist in everything from tailored dresses and evening wear to more streamlined, contemporary silhouettes like day dresses, maxi skirts, and corset tops," she says.

"For a polished, feminine look, pointed-toe pumps, slingbacks, or delicate strappy heels work beautifully, as they elongate the leg and complement the sculpted shape of the dress," Stolch shares exclusively with Glam.

"For a more contemporary take, I love the idea of juxtaposing the structured waist with a chunkier shoe, such as a sleek ankle boot or a more substantial loafer." As far as accessories go, Stolch suggests utilizing a structured handbag, sculptural earrings, or a statement necklace to add flair without taking away from the eye-catching waistline. "The key is to let the architectural quality of the Basque waist do most of the 'heavy lifting' in the outfit," Stolch notes.
