In the throwback photo, taken in 1984, Khan is seen striking a fierce pose while rocking heavy eye makeup and a bright red glossy lip. She's dressed in a vibrant purple corset top embellished with no shortage of tassels, rhinestones, and sequins — perfectly living out the decade's "more is more" philosophy. "Everybody's asking AI to show them what they would have looked like in the '80s," Khan captioned the post. "Baby, I was there. No AI needed! C'mon, hair!"

The '80s were a wild time for style and beauty trends, and even Chaka Khan has admitted to using some unconventional methods to achieve her signature look at the time. Unlike other famous '80s musicians who are practically unrecognizable now, Khan hasn't strayed too far from her hairstyles back in the day — though she has definitely switched to healthier styling methods as she's grown older. Back then, Khan admittedly dyed her real hair using Rit fabric dye — yes, fabric dye. "[I used] Rit dye to start. It's for fiber. It colors blouses, pants, and [synthetic] hair," the singer shared in a 2019 interview with Refinery29. "My hands were red, my clothes were red. That's what started me wearing all black because my hair would bleed." Additionally, to achieve its iconic volume, Khan's hair required a lot of hairspray, which wasn't always easy to deal with. "I hated the hairspray — it gets hard and sticky when you are sweating on stage. It's just a mess," she said in the same interview.
Khan, who hails from Chicago, has opened up about the "Afro-centric" community she experienced during her youth, which inspired her to embrace her hair's natural texture for most of her career. She didn't experiment with hair extensions until the '90s, and it wasn't until the early 2000s that she found her rhythm with clip-ins and weaves. By the time she launched her own hair collection with the extension brand Indique in 2019, Khan had finally mastered the art of finding the right hair pieces, and she wanted to help other women do the same.
