Baby names can go in and out of fashion incredibly fast. Every decade or so, a new naming convention comes around to provide new parents with a breadth of options for their little one. As names often become popular again 100 years after their peak, there are plenty of vintage baby names you can make feel fresh in 2026. Among these old-school names are more than a few Wild West-esque monikers which, according to Reader's Digest, have been growing in popularity since at least 2025. With the revival of Western-themed media through popular shows like "Yellowstone," cowboy fashion, and even music, it comes as no real surprise that Western baby names are making a major comeback in 2026.

Picking a name for your child is no small task, especially considering that whichever name you choose will most likely stay with them forever. Luckily, many of the most popular "Yellowstone"-inspired baby names have a timeless charm that won't sound dated in a few years. Think names like Wheeler (as in Cole Hauser's "Yellowstone" character Rip Wheeler), Laramie (played by Hassie Harrison), Colby (for Colby Mayfield, portrayed by Denim Richards), and even Dutton, which is the surname of the main family in "Yellowstone." You may think that "Dutton" is too niche for a child's name, but "Yellowstone" put the name on parents' radars. As the Wall Street Journal explains, Dutton was one of the most increasingly popular boys' names of 2022, thanks to the Taylor Sheridan show.

However, if you're hesitant about an overtly "Yellowstone" name for your baby, rustic names like Cooper (which means "one who makes wooden casks"), Sawyer (someone who operates a sawmill), Bailey (a medieval word for bailiff) and Ryder (a horseman or night) have a hands-on workman energy that evokes classic Wild West vibes. Whether it's taken from "Yellowstone" or not, there are plenty of reasons why you might like to go for one of our favorite Western monikers.

Why you should consider a Western-inspired baby name

While we have iconic modern Westerns like "Yellowstone" to thank for the recent boom in popularity of Wild West aesthetics (even for naming children), that isn't the only reason you should consider a Western-inspired name for your baby. Like the old-school baby girl names from the '30s and beyond that are making a comeback, names with a Western theme have come back into fashion because of their timeless vibe. Unlike hyper-trendy names, many "Yellowstone" or Wild West-inspired names — like Beth (as in Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton) and Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith's Lloyd Pierce) — are grounded and mature, making them appropriate for young children and the adults they will grow into.

Additionally, non-"Yellowstone" Western names possess an effortlessly cool and low-key energy that you might resonate with. From short, snappy names with Biblical origins (which are very Wild West-feeling) like Gabe, Ezra, Mary, Ruth, and Elijah, to long, classic-sounding names (with ample nickname potential) like Theodore, Susanna, and Rebecca, there are a wide variety of stylish Western-inspired monikers to choose from. Whatever name you bestow upon your baby, consider how important a name can be to self-esteem; intentional names that have the child's long-term life in mind are always better than hyper-trendy ones.
