Lizzo is not here for the haters. The “Truth Hurts” singer recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s iconic “Mean Tweets” segment, during which celebrities read nasty tweets about themselves, and she barely blinked as she shut down a body-shaming tweet, solidifying her as music’s queen of confidence.
In the clip, Lizzo reads a tweet from a user who wrote: “Bus passes and Happy Meals. Two things that I imagine #Lizzo has seen a lot.” The celebrities in this segment usually have a pretty good attitude about their tweets, making fun of themselves right along with their haters. While Lizzo was able to find the humor in the situation, taking a moment to laugh it off, she also wasn’t about to take it lying down.
She responded without missing beat: “Yeah, I’m a big bitch, and I ride a bus. A tour bus, motherf***r. Where’s yours?”
Since releasing her debut album, “Cuz I Love You,” which featured two Billboard Hot 100 singles, the Michigan-born singer has taken the music industry by storm. Her fans love her for her powerful voice, relatable lyrics, and probably most of all, her empowering attitude.
Sadly, this isn’t the first Lizzo has been attacked for the way she looks. Earlier this year, she spoke to Glamour about why it’s insulting to call plus-size women “brave”. “When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No, I’m not,’” she said. “I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy. If you saw Anne Hathaway in a bikini on a billboard, you wouldn’t call her brave. I just think there’s a double standard when it comes to women.”
She also opened up to Essence about why she embraces her cellulite and shares revealing photos of herself on Instagram. “I love creating shapes with my body, and I love normalizing the dimples in my butt or the lumps in my thighs or my back fat or my stretch marks,” she said.
Clearly, nothing is going to keep Lizzo from feeling confident in her own skin — not even a nasty tweet — and that’s why we love her so much.
