It's no secret that Amazon has a plethora of beauty products. From makeup to skincare, you can get pretty much anything from there. Even more narrowed searches, like "makeup remover," bring up too many listings to scroll through.

It's important to note that makeup remover comes in many forms. There are creams, balms, jellies, wipes, and more. The goal is to remove makeup gently and quickly. If you don't take off your makeup every night, it could damage your skin. Skin uses your beauty sleep to renew itself, but it can't do that if it's buried under a layer of foundation (via Neutrogena). Clearly, it's important to the overall health of your skin to have a good makeup remover.

Thankfully, Amazon's bestselling makeup removal product may just help you remove makeup faster than ever. But before you add it to your cart, there are some things you need to know about Amazon's hottest-selling makeup remover.

The bestseller may surprise you

Amazon's makeup remover bestseller may surprise you. It's not micellar water, cold cream, or a cleanser. It's actually Neutrogena Makeup Wipes. The wipes have an overwhelmingly positive rating of 4.7 stars. A quick glance over the reviews show that they are a household staple for many. Their popularity spans beyond Amazon as well.

The product also ranked Best Overall on Byrdie's roundup of makeup remover wipes. The site hails these wipes as a "skincare classic." They earned the same spot on WhoWhatWear's list, and the wipes also come recommended by Today. Honestly, it's hard to find a best makeup remover roundup that doesn't include this product.

"I'm very happy to tell you that these wipes are very moist and extremely soft against the skin," says beauty YouTuber Zabrena. "It feels like you're removing your makeup with a pillow on your face, they're so gentle. These dissolved my eye makeup instantly, including liquid eyeliner and waterproof mascara. Very little rubbing was involved."

In her video, Zabrena tested eight different makeup wipes. The Neutrogena wipes melted her makeup away the fastest. She didn't have to fight with her makeup before sliding the wipe away. When choosing a makeup wipe, that can be pretty important.

Can makeup wipes damage your skin?

However, many skincare lovers have a list of reasons why you shouldn't use makeup wipes. Dr. Tijon Esho, a London-based aesthetic doctor, told Insider that they can cause far more harm than good. "They are formulated to break down makeup," he told the publication. "The chemicals in some cases can be harsh to your skin causing micro-tears, or push makeup and debris deeper into your pores leading to further problems."

Chemicals, micro-tears, and further problems aren't words you really want to hear when talking about your skin. Esho comments that even using just water alone can be better, and that wipes are also not the most environmentally friendly option.

That being said, for occasional use, these moisture-packed, gentle Neutrogena wipes may be a good option, especially if you're looking for a wipe that won't tug your skin. When you need to ditch makeup fast, these wipes may just be your new best friend. Next, find out what makeup wipes are really made of or how to remove makeup without damaging your lashes.
