Jeans Are Getting Baggier In 2024

Those who think bigger is better when it comes to denim can rejoice, as 2024 is seeing a lot of baggy pairs. While 2023 was all about mom jeans, stylist Gillian McHattie told Business Insider that the looser fit of dad jeans will be quite hot this year, and the runways are reflecting this. Gucci showed super slouchy styles worn low at the hips at its spring/summer 2024 runway show, while Jason Wu debuted a lighter-than-air pair of jeans that are perfect for warmer days.

These new jeans aren't like the more structured wide-leg JNCO jeans of the '90s. Rather, designers are using flowy fabrics to give the legs movement. "Sweatpants are definitely out, and I think that's why we're seeing denim have a makeover with softer materials for 2024," stylist Ashley Full shared with Business Insider. Although the high-waisted look is out, don't be afraid of a slightly lower waistline, as it's not going to be super exposing like the ultra-low-waisted Y2K jeans. The fit is more of a mid-rise, so you can play around with tucking in a bodysuit or pairing your jeans with a loose sweater. Ultimately, this baggy style is super versatile, and we love that it's both fashion-forward and comfy.

Pair your jeans with a structured top

Since the loose, slouchy style of jeans is in this year, a top that has good shape will balance your lower half nicely. Try a boxy top that ends right below the waist, and wear your jeans a bit low for a peekaboo look. Don't forget a slim belt to hold your pants up — you don't want to reveal too much!

Platform shoes offer some height

We love the baggy look — but not the dragging of the hems that come with it. A pair of platform boots or sneakers will add some inches to your legs without having to tailor your jeans. Wide cuffs are also trending in 2024, so there's always that option as well.

Barrel jeans are going to be everywhere in 2024

Barrel-leg jeans are another on-trend denim silhouette that's a must-have this year. This style has a wide leg that balloons out around the thighs and calves and then tapers at the ankle. Barrel jeans may not be for everyone — and who knows how long the trend will last — but if you love trying out new fashion trends, this one may be your 2024 hit.

Look for softer fabrics

For a barely there feeling, try a pair of jeans in a soft, thin material. They're a great alternative to joggers, and you can dress them up or down. A pair of plain, white sneakers are great for a casual look, or you can slip on some stilettos to elevate your outfit. You can also size up for an even more relaxed fit.

Wide-leg trousers are classically elegant

Trousers are style staples even outside the office, but this year, you're going to see a lot more room in the legs. These may require a bit of tailoring at the hems, as they're meant to look more like dressy pants, and you won't want too much slouching. Wearing a vest up top adds a nice menswear touch, while a skinny scarf can double as a tie.

Petite frames can rock baggy jeans, too

Baggy jeans can be hard to pull off if you're on the shorter side, but it can be done. Be sure to not choose overwhelming silhouettes, and look for jeans in a petite size. A higher waist will give you an illusion of longer legs and make sure your top hits above your hips. As always, a nice pair of heels does wonders for both your height and 'fit.
