Think You Look Weird In Headbands? Try This TikTok-Viral Hair Hack
As far as hair accessories go, headbands are the most casual and versatile option. You can wear them with any outfit, anywhere you want — to the gym to hold your hair back from your face, to run errands while looking sporty in your athleisure, or even to lunch dates with your loved ones in your cutest casual ensemble. Yes, headbands are a girl's best friend (right after diamonds), but they can be pretty hard to style for some of us. That's why we're glad for this new trick.
The latest popular TikTok hack shows you how to wear a headband without looking or feeling awkward about it. For girls with sparse hairlines, different head shapes, and fine hair, rocking the headband look the way everyone else does is nothing short of challenging. Like hair and beauty influencer @mattloveshair says on TikTok, "If you want to get in on the headband trend, but you're a little insecure about your hairline density, this is a great way to do a headband style." It simply involves strategically tying the front sections of hair around the headband so they give you more volume.
The headband hack
This fast and easy headband hack consists of three easy steps, and you can do them in pretty much any order. By the end, your headband style should result in a flattering and wearable look that doesn't accentuate the hairline and gives the front of the hair a little added volume.
If you want the step-by-step, TikToker @mattloveshair explains it best. First, the headband. "We do a headband on around the neck, save it for later, then we do a chin strap temporarily," he says. To get the chin strap, all you need to do is separate two front pieces of hair, one on each side of your face about 1.5 inches from the hairline, and tie them together beneath your chin. Then, raise the headband, and place it wherever you feel it looks best while letting your front pieces peek out in front.
The hair influencer then suggests connecting each loose front piece to a piece of hair in the back with a hair tie to secure the look. Then, slide the hair tie up to boost the volume around your face. And if you're a fan of breaking the rules, you can also put your headband on first and pull out some front pieces on the go to hide your hairline. It's quicker and just as cute.
Who does this hack work for?
This hack is truly for anyone, but it benefits folks with fine and thin hair the most. Because people with fine and thin hair struggle with hair density, their hairlines can tend to look sparse, which is usually unfairly emphasized when wearing headbands. Most people who experience this try to cover this up with the headband itself, sometimes even lowering it over the hairline, but this can quickly lead you to look like Humpty Dumpty. And who wants that?
Because of this, @mattloveshair mainly recommends this for those who don't want to show their hairline at all when wearing headbands. The effect of this trend is similar to a popular technique that is commonly used to add some volume to women's fine or thin hair — face-framing layers. In fact, founder of Útiles Beauty Josh Liu tells Who What Wear, "For people with thin/fine hair, I recommend face-framing layers tapered into long layers or face-framing with a one-length cut." This is essentially the look you're getting by creating front pieces to pop out underneath the front of the hairband, all sans haircut.
