Celebs At The 2025 Met Gala Who Flopped In Outdated Colors (& Who Ate The Top Trends Up)
Known as fashion's biggest night of the year, the Met Gala has certain rules that attendees must follow. Not surprisingly, one of those rules is to stick to a certain dress code that aligns with the theme of the fundraising event. It's even been rumored that Vogue editor and gala chair Anna Wintour personally approves all outfits before the first Monday in May, when the event is famously held. However, she put the rumor to rest recently, telling "Good Morning America" host Michael Strahan in early May 2025 that she offers advice if asked but doesn't stamp her approval on each look (via People).
For this year's gala, the overwhelming majority of attendees opted for black-and-white ensembles to fit the "Tailored for You" dress code of the night. But a few daring partygoers opted for pops of color. A number of these hues embraced the top color trends of 2025, with gala regulars like Lupita Nyong'o and Gigi Hadid nailing their respective icy blue and gold looks, which could become stunning Met Gala looks we'll never forget. There were a few fashion fails that fizzled, however, when it came to color trends. But we take our hats off to those who gave new palettes a go.
Gigi Hadid's gold was a winner at the 2025 Met Gala
Met Gala regular Gigi Hadid demonstrated her expertise when it comes to embracing the event's theme, yet still looking like her sensational self. She attended the gala sans beau Bradley Cooper in a Miu Miu dress that oozed liquid gold perfection. Gold was one of the big color trends on the spring/summer '25 runways. Hadid demonstrated how to wear it from head to toe for a glamorous event. To translate this to your wardrobe in a less flashy way, opt for a black or white piece with gold details on it, or use the shade to accessorize your outfit, such as in your jewelry.
Mindy Kaling's pops of red made a strong impact on the 2025 Met Gala carpet
Red is back in a way that we haven't seen in years. (So long, Barbiecore pink!) It was splashed across runways in New York, Milan, and Paris, as well as on the Met Gala navy carpet. And one star who pulled the shade off beautifully was Mindy Kaling in Harbison Studio. Why? Because she showed how a splash of the rich shade on her collar, sash, and train can add the perfect pop to neutrals. It oozes sophistication and power. While flashes of pink were fun, feminine, and playful in recent years, red is definitely a more mature option.
However, Teyana Taylor's red missed the mark at the 2025 Met Gala
In a look she co-designed herself, Teyana Taylor went bold in head-to-toe cardinal red. Was it a risk? For sure. Did it pay off? Unfortunately, no. While the shade looks beautiful on her, having all the coordinating accessories, including two headpieces and gloves, took the look too over the top. This would've been one moment to follow Coco Chanel's advice and remove one thing before leaving for the night.
Lupita Nyong'o looked ethereal in icy blue at the 2025 Met Gala
Icy blue is another 2025 trend that dominated runways and made a few cameos at the Met Gala this year, including on host Anna Wintour, who opted for a pale-blue gown topped with a long, suit-inspired jacket. But it was Lupita Nyong'o who shone in the pastel shade. She captured a perfect juxtaposition between masculine and feminine by wearing a tailored Chanel suit with feminine touches in the camellia brooch and floating cape. Take your inspiration here: To really nail the icy blue trend, wear it in light, breezy fabrics.
Joey King was both a hit and miss in sage green at the 2025 Met Gala
The green trend is still going strong into spring and summer, but it's definitely more in the sage sphere than the "Brat" green sphere. While we didn't see a lot of green at the Met Gala, first-time gala goer Joey King opted for Miu Miu in a rich version of the hue. Did it work? Yes and no. For starters, we love the shade of green on the suit, and it looks fresh paired with a black-and-white check shirt. But the gold and maroon cravat at the neck muddled the look and made it look like King's neck had a hickey to hide. What about the embellishments on the suit? Well, this is the Met Gala we're talking about, so a bit of drama is expected, and in this scenario, they work. But outside of this situation? Probably not.
Maya Hawke missed in pale pink and camel at the 2025 Met Gala
While hot pink has hit the backs of closets everywhere, softer shades of rose were prominent on spring/summer runways. Maya Hawke decided to bring the trend to the 2025 Met Gala navy carpet, but while the Prada dress was pretty enough, the entire ensemble wilted like an underwater pale-pink rose. There were too many darts on the dress that weren't flattering on Hawke's figure. And the camel-colored cape didn't do any favors for the actor's complexion, which looked flawless. As we saw on Khaite and Ferragamo's 2025 runways, we'd rather see light pink paired with shades of gray or black instead.
Kara Young had a major mocha-mousse moment at the 2025 Met Gala
The fashion world bid adieu to pops of neon like "Brat" green — aka the outdated fashion color we're saying goodbye to in 2025 — this year in favor of earth tones inspired by nature. One of the richest and most popular is Pantone's color of the year, mocha mousse, which older and younger celebs alike have nailed. And Tony-award winning actor Kara Young showed how stunning the shade can be as she graced the Met Gala navy carpet in a dramatic oversized suit and coordinating hat. The brown shades look refined and luscious, and they offered something more interesting than basic black. It also reminded us that wearing color this season is all about refinement and polish.
