Expensive Trump Family Outfits That Put Their Questionable Taste On Display

Money might make the world go round, but it certainly doesn't buy style, and the Trump family is living proof. They are worth billions (or millions if the accusations of networth inflation hold water), roll with the cream of society, and seem obsessed with hefty price tags. Yet, they manage to turn up with some of the most questionable outfits. This isn't exactly shocking because, as any fashion aficionado will tell you, the best outfits aren't always the most expensive.

Looking good also involves knowing your body, figuring out your skin's undertones, and realizing that less is sometimes more — something that many members of the Trump family are yet to learn, judging by their recurring makeup mistakes and styling missteps. What makes these fashion flops even more surprising is that they happen despite access to top-tier glam teams that many can only dream of. Clearly, no matter how many top designers they work with, the Trump taste always overpowers professional advice.

Melania Trump's superhero outfit was ridiculously steep

Melania Trump's yellow Valentino cape dress is what happens when bold fashion risks go completely off course. Mixing yellow and purple can work, but it demands balance and carefully chosen shades: two things the first lady clearly missed here. The overpowering school-bus yellow dominates the entire look, and it only gets worse with the clashing Barney-purple sleeves and matching shoes.

The shape and cut of the outfit are just as bad, with the voluminous body, high-funnel collar, and superhero-style cape swallowing her whole. But the worst crime of all is that this fashion fail set her back more than $8,000, with the Valentino cape alone priced at $7,700. When you add the Christian Louboutin stilettos and the custom sleeves, there's no doubt the entire 'fit slips past that mark. Melania could have salvaged this look by choosing a better-fitted cut or swapping out the highlighter yellow for butter yellow, a spring 2024 favorite that's on trend, less overpowering, and better suited to her undertones.

Lara Trump should never have left the house in this pricey outfit

We're familiar with Lara Trump's complete style transformation, and we've long accepted her questionable fashion preferences, but until this fashion misstep, no one could accuse her of being outright tacky or trashy. That's why her outfit to a 2023 New Year's Eve party still stumps us years later as we try to list the myriad of things wrong with this dress. For one, it's far too revealing, with its deep chest cut, sheer paneling, and high slit that leave almost nothing to the imagination.

Then there's the feathered wrists, which give party-store costume rather than luxury fashion. To top it off, the high sparkly neckline clashes with the oversized silver earrings she chose, landing this look squarely in what-on-earth territory. This nightmare piece was designed by Trump family favorite Oscar Garcia-Lopez, who's also behind many of Kimberly Guilfoyle's questionable outfits.

Although he didn't reveal exactly how much he charged for this dress, he told Women's Wear Daily that the minimum cost for one of his creations is $5,000. He also gave insight into his design process: "Basically, I just learned by myself by practicing sewing. I think it is a gift, honestly, because sometimes I do something, and I don't know how I did it." Honestly? Neither do we.

Ivanka Trump's state dinner dress was an expensive mistake

There's no forgiving the dress Ivanka Trump wore to the 2018 state dinner, especially when you realize just how pricey it was. The outfit has far too many layers, making her look bigger and puffier while completely hiding her natural shape instead of accentuating it. Sure, we love a soft pink, and polka dots never really go out of style (we're huge fans of playful polka-dot eyeliner and the DIY polka-dot nails trend), but piling them on with multi-tiered ruffles is pure overkill.

The look is so busy that the floral embellishment, which could have cinched her waist, is completely lost in the chaos. Worst of all? This outfit came with a $12,888 price tag. To be fair, the designers behind the dress (Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte) typically deliver high-end, dreamy pieces. But just because they designed it doesn't mean Ivanka had to wear it, especially when it's so ill-suited to her body type. Hard pass, Ivanka.

Tiffany Trump's Taoray Wang dress was a high-priced fashion fail

Tiffany Trump seems to be the least price-obsessed member of the Trump clan, judging by her moderately priced wardrobe. Sure, she shows up in designer labels and pricey jewelry now and then, but it's not unusual to spot her in more affordable outfits. However, at a 2018 fashion show, the youngest Trump daughter stepped out in a Taoray Wang dress that, needless to say, wasn't a good choice. The solid turquoise fabric is eye-catching and had potential, but the ill-fitting shape of the dress is hard to ignore.

The one-sleeve design paired with a high, structured shoulder comes off as imbalanced, and this is only exaggerated by the unnecessary ruffles at the waist. Rather than one cohesive piece, it feels like she is wearing two separate dresses that aren't even on speaking terms. And to top it off, Tiffany Trump repeated one of her biggest makeup mistakes with her unflattering eye makeup. Neither Tiffany nor Wang revealed the price tag, but the designer's dresses typically run between $1,400 and $3,000 — definitely not worth it from a style point of view.

Lara Trump's activewear has an unjustifiable price tag

Lara Trump gets a double mention on our list because her questionable taste seeps not just into the clothes she buys but also into the clothes she creates. When the mother-of-two and gym advocate announced she'd be launching her activewear brand, no one was alarmed. After all, how hard could it be to design passable gym clothes?

Unfortunately, the first look from her line made us do a double-take, and not in a good way. The jarring rainbow gradient on her Signature Leggings looks more suited for a '90s-themed neon party than an actual workout. Beyond the poor color choice, we're quite disappointed with the seams around the waistband as well as the very obvious stitching lines. They seem bulky, draw unnecessary attention, and for some reason, the seam on the inner thigh is a different color from the rest.

And, unsurprisingly, these pieces don't come cheap. This particular set rings in at nearly $200 at the time of writing, rivaling the prices of better-designed brands like Lululemon and Alo Yoga, which means that many Americans can't afford her "America Collection." But honestly, with that color scheme and sewing, we're not sure anyone's missing out.
