"When matching nail polish to skin tones, I always start by identifying the undertone — whether it's warm, cool, or neutral," Kon explains exclusively to Glam. "Warm undertones look beautiful with earthy shades like terracotta, coral, or gold-toned nudes. Cool undertones shine in icy pinks, blue-based reds, and cool-toned purples. Neutral tones are the most versatile and can usually wear a wide range of colors," she adds. "The key is to enhance the natural tone of the skin rather than overpower it." The first step when it comes to figuring out the nail colors that look best on you is actually figuring out what your undertone is. "A simple tip is to look at the veins on your wrist. If they appear blue or purple, you likely have cool undertones; if they're green, you're probably warm-toned," Lisa Kon tells us exclusively. "If it's hard to tell, you might be neutral." 

After figuring out your undertone, the rest is easy. "Once you know your undertone, test polish shades by holding the bottle against your skin in natural light," the nail artist adds. "This helps you see whether the color complements or clashes." Of course, sometimes figuring out whether a color for your nails matches your undertone (even when you know yours) isn't easy, and in that case, you should just go with your gut. "Always trust your instincts — if a shade makes your skin glow, that's a good sign," Kon notes.

While knowing your undertone can be crucial for picking the right shade of foundation, when it comes to your nails, it's all about your personal preference. "Honestly, I believe in a balance," Lisa Kon shares exclusively with Glam. "Understanding what flatters your skin tone can help you make more confident choices, but your personal style should always lead the way."

"If neon green or deep black makes you feel empowered — wear it," she adds. "Nails are an extension of personality and creativity, and there are no hard rules. The best choice is the one that makes you feel your best."
