The Worst-Dressed Celebs At The 2025 Tony Awards
Hold up. Did we miss a memo that Hollywood's stylists are on strike, or maybe a group vacation, and were therefore unable to work the 2025 Tony Awards? Because this red carpet was a memorable one, and not in a great way, we're sorry to say. The event's host, Cynthia Erivo, was just one of a number of celebs who looked almost costume-y, like they raided the wardrobe department of some of Broadway's theaters rather than designer ateliers. Then there was Katie Holmes, whose green top made us scrunch our noses, cock our heads to the side, and furrow our brows in the typical "what is she wearing?" expression.
Thankfully, there were plenty of stars who did deliver, including Helen J. Shen, Sadie Sink, Amal Clooney (natch), Zoey Deutch, Michelle Williams (of Destiny's Child fame), and Julianne Hough, who redeemed herself after landing on the list of worst-dressed celebs at the 2024 Tony Awards. Let's hope these usually-stunning stars redeem themselves as well.
Cynthia Erivo's dress overwhelmed her at the Tony Awards
There's a reason for the old adage "don't let the dress wear you," because you, or Cynthia Erivo in this case, don't want onlookers to only take in your clothes and completely miss the person wearing them. Erivo, who hosted the awards show, often pushes the envelope with her avant-garde style, but this Schiaparelli look completely overwhelmed her petite frame, making the multi-talented actor look swamped in the sculpted piece.
The bottom half of Sarah Paulson's Tony Awards gown was a disaster
Sarah Paulson has had more than a few red-carpet outfits that went off the rails, and we're sorry to include this one as well. The bottom of Paulson's gown looked like it was cut off a wedding dress found in a discount bin and attached to its black velvet top. As a positive, however, the hourglass silhouette is stunning on Paulson.
Laufey's quirkiness didn't work at the Tony Awards
We get it, quirky is Laufey's thing, like it is for her fellow Icelandic singer Björk. Laufey's blouse, skirt, and jacket actually make a cute outfit ... for Mother's Day brunch or work in an office (it could pass as Laufey's creative spin on corporate wear), not the Tonys, which is one of the entertainment world's biggest award shows. Plus, the white lace tights clashed with the off-white lace gloves, creating unforgivable discord.
Cole Escola's tribute look may have had good intentions, but ended up a Tony Awards fashion fail
Cole Escola, whose powerful performance in "Oh, Mary!" racked up five nominations, is no stranger to dramatic dressing for the red carpet. This look, reportedly a tribute to Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, didn't do Escola or Peters justice. Instead, it looked like something you'd find in a Disneyland gift shop. We're all for a tribute, but it needs to be a solid one rather than a "Frozen" knock-off, otherwise you're not doing any favors to anyone.
Ashley Longshore was a muddled mess at the Tony Awards
There's oversized fashion and then there's way oversized to the point of a total eclipse of the star — in this case, artist Ashley Longshore. The icy-blue shade of this ensemble, accented with black, felt on-trend and crisp for a glam red-carpet event. It was just the volume that brought Longshore down, and hopefully not literally, because we can imagine this much fabric could weigh a ton.
Katie Holmes' Tony Awards look missed the mark
For real, what is happening here? When it comes to celebrity fashion, we love an unexpected color combination. We even love mismatched pieces. But they have to work together in some form of harmony, and unfortunately Katie Holmes' Tony Awards look does not deliver on this brief. Perhaps it was an ode to ceremony host Cynthia Erivo, who starred in the "Wicked" movies, but the pink-and-green combo felt a bit 2024 to us. The green taffeta top looked bulky and sloppy, especially where it was tucked into the slim-fitted maxi skirt. Holmes, who starred in "Our Town" on Broadway, often has fantastic style, but her 2025 Tonys look wins her no points.
