Dakota Johnson's Inappropriate Talk Show Outfit Will Always Haunt Her

Dakota Johnson, wardrobe malfunctions, and late-night talk shows seem to be a recurring theme. It all started when Johnson went on "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" in June 2024 to promote "Daddio," and her dress actually broke. During the filming of the show, the screen cut to a clip from "Daddio," and when cameras focused back on Johnson, she was clutching the thin metal strap to her dress, which was one of the '90s basics that was a must-have in 2024

Two years prior to that, on a visit to "The Late Late Show with James Corden," Johnson acknowledged the very short red dress she wore, finding it hard to sit properly without it revealing a lot of flesh. She brushed it off, saying, "It's nothing nobody hasn't already seen," undoubtedly referring to her nude scenes in films including the "Fifty Shades of Grey" franchise, "Wounds," and "Suspiria."

Just when you think the "Materialists" star would have learned her lesson, it's happened again. And now another inappropriate talk-show dress will haunt Dakota Johnson. Of course, she could be doing it on purpose — it certainly has garnered the star plenty of attention. Perhaps this is her "thing" when she goes on late-night talk shows and hosts should now anticipate it with a full sewing kit, duct tape, and a bathrobe at the ready. The most recent incident took place in June 2025 when she was a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." She wore a low-cut black bouclé blazer and coordinating miniskirt, both by Ferragamo. From the moment she sat down, Johnson looked at her chest and seemed visibly flustered. "This is the wrong outfit," she confessed to the host and audience. The risk of a nip slip distracted the actor, and it became a recurring topic throughout her interview with Fallon.

Dakota Johnson had solutions for her inappropriate 'fit

Dakota Johnson's inappropriate talk-show dress provided plenty of humorous content for her and Jimmy Fallon's discussion on his late-night show. At one point, he offered the actor a tissue, which she gamely tucked into the blazer to cover her chest. After a few beats, Fallon took it back and jokingly said he planned to post it on eBay.

Later in the segment, Fallon recounted a story about Dakota's father, famed "Miami Vice" star Don Johnson (her mother is '80s icon Melanie Griffith). He shared how, at a dinner a few years earlier, he had complimented Don's sage-green sweater and the next day, the actor sent it to Fallon to keep. Apparently Fallon kept it for such a moment, as he produced the sweater then and there. He said he wanted her to have it and think of him when she wore it. They suggested giving it back and forth to each other, à la "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," with Fallon dubbing their adventure the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Cardigan." Dakota draped the sweater over herself, as it provided another cover-up. But like the tissue, she removed it moments later, putting her decolleté back on display.

Of course Dakota's not the first, nor will she be the last, celebrity to suffer a wardrobe malfunction. So what's the takeaway for the rest of us? For example, if you're ready to rock the provocative negative space trend, read the tips for making it work. Or look to the ever-inspiring Princess Diana, who had a brilliant hack for avoiding wardrobe malfunctions. The late royal would use her clutch to shield her chest from paparazzi flashbulbs. Perhaps Jimmy Fallon needs to keep a spare clutch along with the sewing kit and robe behind his desk to offer stars like Dakota Johnson when there's a nip slip brewing?
