Stylist Tells Us Easy Ways To Upgrade Your Wardrobe Without Starting From Scratch

Trends tend to return in a circular fashion, but pop culture moves so quickly that the next fad is in before you even take it off the hanger. If you're looking to try out some new ensembles but don't want to go through the hassle of buying new clothes, we've got just the tips for you. Or, perhaps you're simply looking to add some variety to your looks without breaking the bank or shouting that you hate all of your clothes. If this is you — or you've unexpectedly become a super spender and have run into problematic money habits — we've got you covered, too.

We spoke to Cortney St Clair, "The IT Factor Stylist," and she gave us the lowdown on how to branch out without completely re-setting your closet, and how one method, in particular, for drawing inspiration is at the tip of our fingers. "Use Pinterest like a stylist," St Clair exclusively tells us, adding, "If you've got items in your closet that have gone stale from only styling 1-2 ways on repeat, type it into Pinterest with the word 'outfits' (e.g., 'plaid pant outfits')." What does this do, you ask? "You'll get a wave of inspiration and likely spot new combinations you can recreate with what you already own," St Clair says. There are no worries if your wardrobe doesn't perfectly align with what you see, either. "But if you don't have all the pieces, note what's missing...that's your shopping list for intentional upgrades that extend your wardrobe's range," the stylist says.

Accessories and layers are sure-fire ways to mix things up

Pinterest is a wonderful way to draw inspiration for ensembles while utilizing pieces you already own, but there are a few other methods you can implement to improve your styling without throwing away everything you already have.

Cortney St Clair exclusively tells Glam that the secret sauce to varying your looks is hidden in layering, both with clothes and accessories. "Accessories are where personality and versatility meet. Hats, belts, scarves, and handbags can completely transform the same outfit," St Clair explains. "For example, swapping a structured tote for a raffia bag instantly changes the feel from buttoned up and polished to breezy-chic." Even the simplest fashion accessories can make a statement, so you should never be scared to swap one out to create an entirely new outfit.

Similarly, the stylist expresses to us how mixing up layers with a few statement pieces can elevate your look. "Blazers, cardigans, sweaters, button-up shirts can all be styled over multiple different base looks to elevate the look, or worn solo and give you the most bang for your buck when shopping to create the most versatility."
