We Tried VO5 Shampoo & Its Hair-Plumping Effect Vastly Outshines Pantene's Viral Comeback

When it comes to making sure your tresses are healthy and clean, there's nothing more important than picking the right shampoo for your hair. Brands like Pantene have become go-tos for many and have even blown up online in recent months, but they're far from the only budget options that can show you great results. Personally, I feel like Pantene leaves a layer of residue on my fingers after I wash my hair, so I was on the search for an alternative — and preferably at a lower price.

I needed to find a shampoo that worked for all hair types because I've had thick, naturally curly hair my entire life. Changes in weather were unrelenting in making my tresses quickly go from curly to bushy. My curls are tight, meaning that knots and tangles are regular occurrences. I straighten my hair pretty frequently to make maintenance easier, but I'd like to rely less on heat tools. I got into the habit of cutting my locks short during the summer and recently chopped off about 5 inches because I was capital-D done with the split ends. Now, my hair just reaches my shoulders, and I'd like to give my curls the chance to shine.

VO5 shampoo caught my attention thanks to its various scents and benefits, ranging from moisturizing to clarifying and revitalizing. I selected a volumizing shampoo with collagen to define my curly mane. This formula appeared translucent compared to the company's fruit-scented shampoos, which I predicted would feel lighter on my heavy tresses. Plus, the tall, 15-oz. bottle only cost me a dollar and some change!

VO5 left my curly hair relaxed and nourished

VO5 doesn't just focus on beauty; it also prioritizes hair health. In fact, the name VO5 is inspired by the five vitamin oils that are found in every product made by the haircare line. I was excited to try it, so I hopped in the shower right after waking up. First thing in the morning, my hair looks pretty dingy and frizzy, so it could definitely use some livening up.

The first thing I appreciated about the VO5 shampoo is its value. One pump, and I got a healthy dollop, making it clear that one bottle would last me a long time. The shampoo lathered nicely and had a pleasant, subtle smell even though it didn't have a featured scent. When shampooing, my main focus is working the product through my hair to make sure my curls aren't sticking together from their density. When applying the VO5 shampoo, I instantly noticed the feeling of my hair. Each individual strand felt silky and strong.

When I got out of the shower, I was surprised that my curls looked relaxed rather than tight. They started to plump up more as they dried. I use to rely on plopping my curly hair after a shower, but since cutting it short, I let it air-dry before taming leftover frizz with a bit of Color Wow Dream Coat (we previously asked a cosmetic chemist how it works). The next day, my hair still felt shiny and smooth. Even after sleeping on it, there was definite bounce, as promised! I'll absolutely be using VO5 shampoo again to keep my curls healthy and nourished from root to tip.
