Kelly Osbourne's Stunning Hair Transformation
It's expected that a rockstar has a bangin' head of hair, but rarely are the locks of their family members just as fierce. For the late Ozzy Osbourne, this was exactly the case. Ozzy himself frequented the salon chair, first dyeing his hair blond in the 1980s and then experimenting with red streaks in his naturally dark hair in the 2000s. No matter the color of Ozzy's hair, though, it always went past his shoulders.
Ozzy's wife of nearly 50 years, Sharon Osbourne, has rocked some seriously stunning styles as well. She spent almost two decades with a rich, deep-red bob before dyeing it a silver-white shade in February 2020. She ended up returning to her signature color eight months later, as the lighter shade made her uneasy. "Um, I don't know, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I'm like, 'Nah, you look like Grandma Clampett,'" Osbourne joked during an October 2020 episode of "The Talk" (via People). "Nah, I'm changing it back, and that's what I did."
Like her parents, Kelly Osbourne's natural hair color is also unrecognizable, as she began dyeing it in the early 2000s and hasn't looked back since. After she experimented with nearly every color under the sun, one particular shade became her signature. "I wish I could put the feeling in a bottle and sell it to the world — I'd just give it away, I don't even want the money — of how I felt the first time I looked in the mirror with lavender hair," Kelly told The Cut in June 2017. This might be yet another reason everyone should try dyeing their hair at least once. Kelly hasn't let one single color define her, though, and her entire hair transformation has been exquisite.
1984-2001: Kelly Osbourne rocks her natural golden hair
Though the photos of Kelly Osbourne's natural hair are as rare to find as buried treasure, she rocked her naturally gold locks before she began dyeing her hair in the early 2000s. During her interview with The Cut, Osbourne said, "My mum's been at me since I dyed my hair to go back to having blond hair, because the color of my natural hair is golden." She has since uploaded some throwback snaps to Instagram, revealing some adorable childhood photos where she's rocking the natural hair. It has likely darkened over the years, as Osbourne revealed her brunette root growth during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic in another post.
Though photographic evidence suggests otherwise, Osbourne's gold hair was the color she rocked for the longest, as she didn't start dyeing all of it until 2002, when she was 18 years old, but more on that later. It doesn't seem like Osbourne will be returning to her roots, as having brightly colored hair makes her feel the most like herself. "Basically, my color has become me," she told People in 2014. "The first time I dyed it and looked in the mirror, I saw myself, and I felt like me. I'll never be a natural girl. I'll never be normal or simple. The most insulting thing someone said to me was to call me 'beige.'"
2002-2009: Kelly Osbourne dyes her hair for the first time and gets hooked
Kelly Osbourne first debuted her new cut and color, a hot-pink bob, on her family's beloved MTV reality show, "The Osbournes," which ran from 2002 until 2005. By the second season, the bob would turn black, the edgy look becoming her staple for the show, though she would have lighter tresses here and there.
After spending some time with blond hair, she returned to the black locks, experimenting with different colored streaks and highlights. Red, blue, and purple graced her mane, and she even tried out split dye with her blunt bangs, dyeing them platinum and leaving the rest of her A-line bob black in 2004.
In 2009, Osbourne encountered a big hair hurdle she wasn't expecting. According to Fox News, the "Papa Don't Preach" singer was trying to lighten her hair, but it turned out to be too yellow, so she used blue shampoo provided by her then-partner to fix it. Still, the drama didn't end there. "... they put the toner on and it made all my hair fall out and I was just like, cut it," she explained. Ultimately, after several years of switching between blond and black and experimenting with different lengths, Osbourne finally found her color. She appeared as a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars" that year, where she debuted her lavender shade.
2010-July 2017: Kelly Osbourne's iconic purple-gray hair color is born
Kelly Osbourne continued to evolve her lavender locks in 2010, and it eventually became her signature look. At the time, she was serving as a host on "Fashion Police," and the look became so associated with her that the show's producers had her put it in writing. "I'm contracted to this hair color ... I can't change it for two years. I wanted to go green, but was told I wouldn't be able to work anymore," Osbourne said at the Lucky Fabb Conference in April 2013 (via E! News). What she did do, though, was continue to try out different styles. A pixie with shaved sides, extensions, bobs, you name it. However, the reception of her unique 'do wasn't always as positive.
"It was before anybody did it — people wore wigs, of course, but they didn't dye it in this color. I got told I should kill myself, that I looked like an old lady, Dame Edna's ugly child she didn't want, all sorts of stuff, but I loved it," Osbourne explained during her 2017 interview with The Cut. It was that self-acceptance that would one day spread to those around her, as she would be connected with a little boy who was teased for having pink hair around July 2017. During their phone call, she offered him some words of wisdom. "Even though everyone doesn't like [my hair], I like it, so it doesn't matter," she told him, according to Allure.
August 2017-February 2024: Kelly Osbourne experiments with warmer colors before returning to the purple
In August 2017, Kelly Osbourne got the hair-color itch again, and back into the salon chair she went. She posted a selfie to Instagram sporting a fiery-orange bob with a side shaved. She certainly is her mother's daughter, as her new warm locks and cut looked strikingly similar to Sharon Osbourne's signature 'do. The color didn't last long, though, as she was back in the chair in the winter, finally going back to blond and growing it out past her earlobes. By August 2018, she was ready for a change. The "Fashion Police" alum wrote on Facebook, "Think about going dying my hair back to lavender. I just don't feel like myself with blonde hair! What do you guys think?"
Indeed, she dyed her hair just as the COVID-19 pandemic rolled around in 2020. What resulted was the aforementioned root growth on her purple locks. "I can't lie I'm really starting to like what's happening with my hair! It's about 20 different shades of purple and blue. Should I keep it like this?" she wrote in an Instagram caption. As lockdown restrictions lifted, you better believe Osbourne was back in the salon chair to get an all-over purple refresh in April 2021, even adding length and volume with extensions. She rocked the deep-violet locks until February 2024.
March 2024-Present: Kelly Osbourne finally bids farewell to the lavender locks
Kelly Osbourne bid adieu (for now) to her iconic lavender hair when she opted for a more silver-toned look with subtle pink lowlights in March 2024. Based on the comments under her Instagram post of the 'do debut, it may be her best look yet. One user wrote, "This hair colour is so much better. You look beautiful." Another added, "Chic Barbie hair! Love it!" Still, it wasn't too drastic a change from the OG lavender, that is, until she was ready for another change two months later.
In May 2024, Osbourne was ready to get back to her roots, literally. She dyed her hair icy white but kept her dark roots showing, the color complementing her cool undertones. While fans were certainly pleased by the new look, one wrote on Instagram, "Stunning you should have done this years ago girl," but others couldn't help but wonder if this was the end of an era. At the time of writing, she's been rocking this color for over two years, so only time will tell.
