Margot Robbie Is Almost Unrecognizable With Her Natural Hair Color
It seems like just yesterday that Margot Robbie was leaning into her Barbie character as she promoted the film of the same name, propelling it to one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. And we, like most fans, couldn't get enough of the Aussie actor's method dressing. We wanted to know how to get the perfect iconic Barbie ponytail, and made Pinterest boards with pins of her hair color to show our colorists so we would know what to ask for at the salon to get the perfect Barbie blond.
Robbie, who was a producer on the project as well as its lead, seemed the perfect choice to play the iconic doll. After all, she embodies so many of Barbie's physical characteristics. Or does she? Believe it or not, Robbie is more of a Skipper, the doll's fictitious brunette sister, and less of a blond Barbie in real life. Whether we're looking at baby pics or investigating her roots, it's clear to see that Margot Robbie is almost unrecognizable with her naturally brown hair color, wouldn't you agree?
Margot Robbie's history has brunette moments
Before shutting her Instagram account in 2021, Margot Robbie's collection of posts included one of her and her brother from childhood, circa 1991 (she was born in July 1990). The pic, which can still be seen on a fan page, shows the pint-sized cutie with a red ribbon around her head and a healthy smattering of brunette hair. Her brother, on the other hand, is clearly a blondie. We take that, along with red-carpet appearances in 2011 when she was sporting light-brown hair, as proof that Robbie's hair isn't naturally blond.
By the time she reached Hollywood in the late 2000s, she was firmly established as a blond actor and she clearly intended on continuing that thread instead of sampling her natural brunette hair again. However, she did veer away from her golden locks upon occasion. There was her role as a stewardess on the short-lived ABC series "Pan Am," where her hair color looked to be pretty close to her natural shade. Then there was the major shift in 2014, when she sported a deep, rich-chocolate shade for a role in the post-apocalyptic film "Z for Zachariah" (don't worry, we didn't see it either). While the brown tresses made her blue eyes pop, it's almost jarring to look at because she is so unrecognizable with the darker hair color. "The Wolf of Wall Street" star showed off the dark espresso shade for some major red carpets that year, including the Oscars and Met Gala, before plunging head-first back into the blond pool by summertime.
Margot Robbie's roots tell no lies
A big giveaway that Margot Robbie's natural hair color is actually a shade of brown? Her roots. When she's photographed in bright natural sunlight, the blond highlights really pop. But when the light is dim and perhaps when her touch-ups are overdue, it's clear to see that the "Suicide Squad" star is a brunette.
Celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz, who also works with Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney, has been charged with the upkeep of Robbie's blond mane. As he told E! News, "Blonde is one of the most complicated colors to achieve." (Ahem, further proof that hers is from a bottle.) He revealed, "I weave a certain amount of highlights on different parts of the base, as opposed to bleaching her entire head of hair."
Fans approve. Comments under Schwartz's Instagram post about the color have included compliments like "absolutely gorgeous," "flawless," and "perfection." While there are pros and cons of reverting back to your natural hair color, we can see why Robbie has stuck with blond. It's her signature look now and has inspired countless women to replicate it with their colorists. What's not to love?
