Glasses Styles Perfect For Women Over 60
Whether you need them or they're simply a fashion accessory, wearing glasses is a fun way to liven up your look. When you're 60 years old and up, however, certain styles are more flattering than others. And no, you don't have to stick to the boring styles you see on a rack while waiting for your prescription at your local drugstore. There are tons of options when it comes to shapes and colors, and fashion stylist and lifestyle expert Joseph Katz, who offers Skype Style sessions and hosts The Katz Walk on YouTube, is sharing exclusive tips with Glam on what to get if you're mature.
"For women over 60, I believe your frames should reflect your personal style. Even if you lean toward a more conservative look, try choosing frames slightly larger than what feels comfortable. Stepping just outside your comfort zone can turn your glasses into a striking style element that elevates your overall look," he tells us.
If you wear specs every day, your pair could become part of your personality or brand — for example, Lauren Boebert looks completely different without her glasses — so it's important that the ones you get are perfect for you and your face. And as long as you skip certain glasses shapes that don't flatter older faces, your frames will be functional and stylish at the same time.
Oversized frames give your face some flair
There's just something so glamorous about oversized glasses — who can forget the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' penchant for large sunnies? Aside from being oh-so chic, style expert Joseph Katz shares just why they're perfect for those over 60 years old. "These are great for someone who wants to add a bit of drama to their look. Also, they detract from fine lines around the eyes," he exclusively tells Glam. One of Katz's favorites is Cutler and Gross' 0811 Square Sunglasses, which can be made into a prescription. Just tie a silk scarf around your neck, and you'll look just like Jackie O.
Circular styles can round out angular faces on mature women
Folks lose volume in their faces as they age, so faces can become more angular over time. Or, perhaps you were naturally born with high cheekbones or a strong jawline. If that's the case, Joseph Katz suggests going for round glasses. He exclusively tells us, "Round frames can soften harder edges of the face, so depending on your face shape, this is a good option. They are great for heart-shaped and square faces." Katz recommends Mykita's Eilish pair, a classic round pair in a lovely champagne color that will give you the stealth wealth and quiet luxury (there's a difference!) looks at the same time.
Cat-eye glasses defy gravity on older faces
If you want to counteract drooping features, cat-eye glasses are the shape for you. "The great upswept design of the cat eye can draw the eyes up, creating a lifting effect for your face. This shape is especially great for square and round face shapes," Joseph Katz exclusively advises Glam. For a bold take on this style, try a pair with super-thick frames, like Vicci Eyewear's Sofia Rx pair, which comes in a variety of colors. If you're more of a classic gal, Katz suggests Visionist's Sori, which is a thinner, more traditional look.
Semi-rimless frames are the epitome of minimal chic
The perfect pair of glasses for those who want something sleek is the semi-rimless style. "I love the semi-rimless as it is a really soft way to enhance the features of your face that is both minimal and stylish. There are some great retro-style semi-rimless frames that are so cool and on trend," Joseph Katz shares exclusively with Glam. The Look Optic pair that Katz recommends has the upper half of the rims covered in gold, while the bottom part is bare, giving just enough glitz.
Rimless styles are perfect for the no-glasses look
Perhaps you're new to wearing glasses, or you just don't like the way you look in them. If this is the case, a rimless style, like the Warby Parker Olin pair, could be ideal because it'll be almost invisible on your face. These are also great if you don't want to draw attention to your eyes or if you find thick frames cumbersome. A pair in a rounded rectangle shape is timeless and classic, and you won't have to think twice about having to adjust your makeup to the shape of your glasses.
Bright styles make you look younger, too
You may think that neutral colors are the way to go if you're 60 and older, but bright colors actually take years off of your appearance. Don't shy away from bold glasses — instead, embrace the fun side of wearing them. Multi-colored round ones like Vint & York's Henri pair will show your playful side, and as a bonus, you don't have to worry about matching them with your OOTD. Plus, as you age, your skin loses pigment, so this is a great way to add some color to your face without having to pile on the blush, which is a win-win in our books.
