Savannah Guthrie Is Unrecognizable In Throwback Photo From Her Local News Days

You won't recognize Savannah Guthrie without makeup, but her '90s hair has the "Today" show host looking like a totally different person. While on-air during a September 2025 broadcast, a fan shared a throwback photo of Guthrie decades ago as a reporter in a Tucson, Arizona, news station. The younger journalist sported an angled bob haircut that came back on trend years later, but the bouffant at the crown was definitely a dated look. "It was very '90s, I think I tried to have 'The Rachel,'" Guthrie explained of the popular haircut Jennifer Aniston wore on "Friends" (via People). She then laughed and said, "Thanks for coming, now we can burn that."

Guthrie referenced her earlier style in May 2023 while giving a commencement speech at Georgetown University. As shared on her Instagram page, the news anchor told the audience, "I worked in local television news, rising from market to bigger market with my reporter's notebook and helmet hair and red blazer when I decided to blow it all up and go to law school." Back then, Guthrie likely didn't have the connections to get "The Rachel" from its creator, celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan. However, in a full-circle moment, days after the "helmet hair" reveal on the "Today" show, the chief legal correspondent for NBC News got to experience her very own cut by the hands of McMillan, himself.

Savannah Guthrie sported a fresh updated version of The Rachel

Savannah Guthrie may not have nailed "The Rachel," which is the most iconic haircut of all time, but she got a second chance many years later on "Jenna & Friends." In an Instagram post shared in September 2025, Guthrie is seen with Chris McMillan, who gave her the most gorgeous haircut ever. The blunt lob featured feathery layers that framed the former White House correspondent's cheekbones. After cutting off a few inches of Guthrie's hair, the stylist used a large round brush to shape the strands into loose waves that moved oh-so effortlessly. "Hallelujah! Cheers to stylish bobs," a fan commented.

While this is one of Guthrie's best looks, there's one particular style that she's not so fond of. During her 10th anniversary celebration on the "Today" show in June 2021, she stated while referring to a past color change, "I don't know why I thought I needed to dye my hair red that one time." She continued, "I just went out one day and dyed it red, and came in the next day, and all the bosses were like, 'What's that?'" Red, blond, or brunette, we think Guthrie can rock any color, but the bouffant needs to stay in the past where it belongs.
