Shoes To Avoid Wearing With Skinny Jeans In 2026 (Unless You Want To Look Outdated)

Attention, everyone: If you were one of those people who thought it was finally time to ditch your skinny jeans, we hate to break it to you but they're cool again. The trendsetters are bringing back the slim silhouette everyone bid adieu to years ago, but the returned skinny jean trend has been remixed for 2026 and there are two major catches.

First and foremost, the silhouette! While there's nothing wrong with pulling off your old skinnies by tucking them into massive knee-high boots, the skinny jean has evolved quite a bit. The constricting style that often feels like leggings hasn't completely disappeared, but there's a shift toward straight (rather than clingy) silhouettes that maintain a slim profile and streamline the leg. The second catch? Footwear.

To get the inside scoop, Glam spoke exclusively with fashion designer David Brownson, who was also the winner of the second season of "Inferno Runway." According to our expert, skinny jeans carry a specific "attitude" that can easily veer into "dated" territory if "not proportioned well." Footwear can make or break your outfit and either complete your look or make you look like you're stuck in the past. Unfortunately, stiletto heels will do the latter. If you're tired of baggy jeans and would love to wear bottoms that are a bit more form-fitting, the choice of shoes is just as crucial as how tight your skinny jeans are. So, here's the 411 on the shoes you should avoid wearing with skinny jeans in 2026.

Skip the ballet flats and pair your skinny jeans with chunky loafers

While classic fashion bibles might still champion the "French girl" ballet flat, this is one of the outdated shoe trends to ditch in 2026. Our style expert David Brownson wants people to take a bolder, more polarizing stance for the year ahead. The designer is firm in our exclusive chat: "Avoid ballet flats ... they look very dated and don't have the balance of today's trend." It makes sense; pairing skinny jeans with ballet flats does have the tendency to create a dimensional flatline that lacks the "attitude" that Brownson emphasizes.

For those looking to move beyond the basics, but who aren't a fan of heels, try styling your favorite skinny jeans with chunky loafers instead, which are back en vogue. By swapping a delicate flat for a shoe with thick soles — Brownson advises that you could even get away with heavier ankle boots — your outfit gets a visual anchor that helps the proportion and balance of the overall look. The heavy, masculine edge of a chunky loafer provides the structural weight a slim leg needs to be a real 2026 statement look rather than a 2016 throwback outfit. It doesn't hurt that loafers can also elevate any casual outfit.

Don't style your skinny jeans with stilettos and opt for kitten heels instead

Next on the list of shoes to avoid unless you want to look dated are classic stiletto heels. David Brownson warns in our exclusive chat that reaching for a spindly heel to dress up your skinny denim is a move you'll want to avoid as it feels very 2010s. When the heel is too sharp and thin, it lacks the visual weight necessary to balance out a slim denim silhouette. Then an ensemble can easily veer into dated territory.

The modern way to get the extra height without worrying about spraining your ankle is the kitten heel. The latest and trendiest street style looks are full of fashion-forward influencers styling their favorite skinny jeans with a pointy kitten heel, and Brownson says you'll get extra fashion points for colored heels. While looking so effortlessly chic, kitten heels give that polished vibe without looking like you're trying too hard. Oh, and you'll also want to make sure your skinny jeans aren't too tight for this chic city-girl look.

This is where hybrid skinny jeans, like cigarette or stovepipe styles, come to play. While these styles are just as structured, they're not as tight and have a straight drop from the knee that creates an intentional gap at the ankle. That breathing room is the secret to pulling this look off.

Skip the flimsy and unsupportive strappy sandals and welcome the structured sneaker

You may have noticed by now, but our style expert David Brownson is all about the "attitude" and well "proportioned" balance of an outfit. That's why he tells Glam exclusively that you should ditch sandals when you wear skinny jeans as they "don't look polished" and "they are too casual." Sandals have almost zero physical profile, so they fail to ground a look. Without that weight at the bottom, the outfit can end up looking top heavy or even worse, unfinished.

That said, Brownson is all for styling skinny jeans with structured sneakers for those casual days when you want to run errands or grab coffee with friends in style. Plain white sneakers go with everything, but if you prefer a look with more character, then a slightly chunkier sports-style shoe will offer the structure that will help balance out a slim leg perfectly. For those who simply love a clean look, thinner, retro-inspired styles are also trending in 2026.

White, black, or other neutral tones are often the top choices when it comes to sneakers, but Brownson encourages adding a bit of flare with your sneaker game by trying out bright colored sneakers. If you're feeling bold, there's a vast number of trending colors to look for and try such as lime green, all kinds of pink hues, and even electric blue.
