What Carrie Underwood Looks Like When She Embraces Her Natural Hair Texture

Singer Carrie Underwood has been in the spotlight since 2005 when she won Season 4 of the singing competition series "American Idol." It's no surprise that with over two decades in the industry, we've seen the musician change her appearance multiple times. In fact, the stunning hair transformation of Carrie Underwood alone proves that the singer isn't afraid of a new look. However, seeing Underwood's natural hair texture definitely caught us off guard, as the star usually has her hair styled in either voluminous curls or a sleek blowout.

Underwood's husband, former ice hockey player Mike Fisher, often shares glimpses of the couple's private life on Instagram, which is exactly where we got to see the "Jesus, Take the Wheel" singer show off her natural hair texture. While Underwood frequently styled her hair in curling wand curls at the beginning of her career, her natural hair texture more closely resembles beachy waves. "I tend to have a natural curl in my hair anyway, but not a whole lot," Underwood shared with HuffPost in 2015. "When I was in college I would put a lot of product in my hair and force it to be curly." In fact, we already discussed how unrecognizable Carrie Underwood was in the "American Idol" audition that started it all, and her curly hair is certainly a big reason. "I definitely did that my first 'Idol' audition! I call it my 'crunchy' hair," Underwood explained, adding, "That I might like to undo if I could."

In private, it seems as if Underwood has been embracing her natural wavy hair texture for a while, but in 2025 the Grammy Award-winning singer also decided to go back to her natural hair color — or at least something closer to it.

Carrie Underwood said goodbye to blond by embracing her natural hair color

Even though Carrie Underwood rose to fame as a bright blond, the truth is that the singer's natural hair color is slightly darker — somewhere between a dark blond and light brown. In fact, Underwood's natural hair color is the perfect example of brond, the color right on the verge between the two color categories. In 2024, cashmere brond was a low-maintenance hair color trend. Underwood decided to dye her hair back to her natural hair color in the summer of 2025, sharing the result with her followers on Instagram. "Well, the last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old, but I thought it might be time to give it a second chance," she wrote in the caption of her post.

Back in 2012, Underwood admitted to Refinery29 that she wanted to try out darker hair. "I'd love to do a little more with hair color. I've always been blonde! The problem is, I don't want to shock people — like if I dyed my hair brown, I don't want people think I'm turning dark and serious," Underwood said. Well, a little over a decade later, the country star finally took the leap. Since switching to brond, Underwood's Instagram feed has been flooded with countless images of the musician rocking her new hair, often also styling it in waves that look very similar to her natural hair texture. With the years she's spent in the spotlight, it certainly seems as if Underwood was ready to embrace a more low-maintenance, natural look. Dyeing her hair as close to her natural shade as possible while also embracing her wavy texture certainly seemed like a great place to start.
