HGTV Stars We're Begging To Up Their Style Game

HGTV stars are experts at sprucing up old houses and designing them with a keen eye for style. They seem to know just how to envision a kitchen makeover or make shiplap trendy (we're looking at you, Joanna Gaines). However, while some of them are wizards at jazzing up an interior, their daily 'fits leave much to be desired. We get that it's not practical to work in heels and dresses, but off-camera is the time to show off those sartorial skills. For example, HGTV star Alison Victoria has undergone a gorgeous transformation, going from jeans and a flannel shirt to body-hugging dresses on the red carpet.

It seems several of the HGTV stars are most comfortable in jeans and/or long, flowy dresses with lots of ruffles. What they may not know is that printed prairie dresses are becoming outdated, and there are tons of other comfy options. While these pro decorators are known for their down-to-earth personalities, we wouldn't mind if their inner divas came out and upped their fashion game.

Jenny Marrs had the chance to wow on the red carpet and failed

Jenny Marrs has had a complete transformation from her early days growing up in Florida to becoming a huge HGTV personality. The "Fixer to Fabulous" star, who hosts the show alongside her husband, Dave Marrs, may have risen up in the decorating world, but one thing that has remained the same is her laid-back style. Even while attending the Daytime Emmys in 2024, she opted for a simple one-shouldered gown that fell in a shapeless silhouette down to her ankles. As for her everyday wear, she's often seen in outdated jeans and a boring sweater.

A Reddit user, who noticed the mom of five's lack of style, vented, "Jenny Marrs' obsession with cropped jeans. Especially wide-leg cropped jeans. Can we talk about this? They are NOT flattering on her at all ... and she has a nice figure. Anyone else ever feel compelled to send her better jeans?"

It just so happened that Jenny posted an Instagram pic of herself wearing said wide-legged cropped jeans and told fans, "I absolutely love antique and/or shopping for home decor, [but] I absolutely loathe shopping for clothes. I want someone to hand me a pair of pants and a shirt and tell me what to wear." With her HGTV paycheck, perhaps it's time to splurge on a good stylist.

Joanna Gaines needs to expand her wardrobe

Joanna Gaines is known for her homey renovations that make a house feel lived-in, and her personal style reflects just that. The "Fixer Upper" star usually shows up in jeans and a comfy sweatshirt, both on and off camera, and it seems Joanna's husband, Chip Gaines, isn't that impressed with her everyday wardrobe. The mom of five shared with Pop Sugar that she loves her go-to flared jeans, adding, "I wear them, not often, I wear them every day. Chip is just like, 'Are you serious?' And I'm like, 'Because they just fit right,' you know?"

Aside from jeans, Joanna loves wearing long, loose-fitting dresses and unstylish overalls, which may be perfect for her farm life, but they're not giving glam. And, her red carpet 'fits are pretty basic as well, with the renovator often going for solids in boring colors. We would love to see Joanna in something more dramatic, such as feathery ruffles or an eye-catching print. Redecorating a home requires one to think outside the box, and the Magnolia founder needs to do so with her wardrobe as well.

Erin Napier should go beyond the prairiecore aesthetic

Prairiecore may be a trend that comes and goes, but for Erin Napier, it's practically her whole persona. And, when she's not wearing midi dresses with ruffles and busy prints, she tends to choose boring sweaters paired with basic jeans. "I am forever seeking the capsule wardrobe that does not make a statement. I am of an age now where I like clothes that feel like a seasonal uniform. Maybe that's just part of raising young children and working, my brain feels chaotic, so my clothes are not," she told People.

We love that Napier has a go-to look, but she can step it up for special events. For example, she chose a loose-fitting black dress with busy florals and polka dots for an appearance on the "BUILD Series" podcast in 2020. She also wore another eyesore to the 2022 CMAs that was engulfed in flowers as well. It definitely matched Napier's prairiecore persona, but we wish that she had chosen something a bit edgier, like a bit of leather or bling, especially for an awards show.

Jasmine Roth's minimalist design style extends to her wardrobe

Jasmine Roth may love the functional minimalism of the Japandi style, but that doesn't mean her outfits have to be no-frills as well. However, it seems that she can't let go of functional clothing, and according to her Instagram account, the "Help! I Wrecked My House" star practically lives in sweatshirts, jeans, and knits. The HGTV star even admitted to Style Me Pretty that she has an obsession with Lululemon pants. "If I'm not in work clothes, it's these leggings all day, every day. They may cost a bit more, but they last forever!" she raved.

Roth kept her look simple, even on the red carpet for the "Barbie" premiere in 2023. While she was on-theme with a bright pink dress, the ruffled shoulders and pleated skirt were giving outdated prairiecore, much like other HGTV stars' preferences. The 'fit was a bit too casual for such a big event, especially as Roth was a contestant on "Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge." We would have loved to see her represent the network in a knockout gown, but sadly, even her hair and makeup were lacking.
