Helen Mirren's Inappropriate Outfit At The 2004 Emmys Was Beyond Tasteless
Oscar-winning actor Helen Mirren may be known for her monumental acting skills, including her stunning portrayal in "The Queen," but she let fans down at the 2004 Emmys with an outfit that came across as being tasteless. In fact, some would say it's one of the most inappropriate outfits in Emmys history. Why? She wore a saree, the traditional South Asian clothing piece, which could be deemed cultural appropriation if Mirren wore it without understanding or appreciating its context. Add to that the fact that Mirren is English and the British have a long history of colonizing and exploiting India, and this look became even more inappropriate.
But some South Asian style experts, including the face behind Indian brand Surreal Styles, believe that we shouldn't cry "fashion foul" too fast. If the wearer understands the cultural significance of wearing the draped fabric piece, then sarees aren't automatically problematic. In one Reddit discussion, a user explained, "If you're invited to an event that calls for a sari by your neighbours, wear it after you've discussed it with them, but I wouldn't wear one casually." However, others believe that they can also be worn in day-to-day life, with one sharing, "... whenever one of my non Indian friends wants to learn about culture or take part of it, older women are excited to include him/her ... Even if you weren't born Indian, if you at interested in it, I say go for it. Just make sure you are educated on what you're doing."
But for a British woman at an American awards show? Doesn't seem like Mirren was an envoy of cultural appreciation at a significant Indian occasion. If it were up to us, we'd say Mirren should have erred on the side of sensitivity and opted for something else.
Helen Mirren has delivered much more tasteful looks since
As far as we're aware, Helen Mirren, who turned 80 in 2025, has never publicly commented on why she wore a saree to the 2004 Emmys. Thankfully, however, she hasn't committed the faux pas again. In fact, Mirren has had many stunning looks throughout her celebrated career (we'll brush past her 1997 flop that landed her on the list of worst Golden Globes looks of all time).
One of her elegant outfits was a purple Dolce & Gabbana dress for the 2016 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, which was just one of many times she's chosen the regal hue. Another tasteful pick was the black Escada gown with gold embellishments that she wore to the 2014 SAG awards, landing her on multiple best-dressed lists around the world. Both moments prove that this L'Oréal spokesperson is one of the famous older women who don't seem to age. Presumably, however, her sensitivities and awareness have matured over the years.
