Kelly Reilly Is Absolutely Stunning Without Makeup

With all of the elaborate costumes, makeup, and hair styling necessary to turn today's actors into ranchers from the 1880s, 1920s, and the modern era, many fans wonder what the "Yellowstone" universe's leading ladies look like without makeup. Kelly Reilly, who portrays "Yellowstone" matriarch Beth Dutton, has certainly received her flowers for her amazing acting — with a sequel spin-off series centered around Dutton set to premiere in mid May 2026 — as well as her beauty. The English actor regularly takes on a rugged yet sexy look for her TV series, but what Beth Dutton from "Yellowstone" looks like in real life is far different.

In a post to her since-deleted Instagram account, Reilly shared a car selfie she took while filming the third season of "Yellowstone." In the pic, Reilly can be seen rocking a "Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch" baseball hat, as well as a bare face. The actor's skin was glowing, and even with the light shining on her face from outside, the clear texture of her face was visible. Reilly's bright blue eyes popped off of her pale skin and blond (very Beth Dutton) hair. Even though her moody eye looks on "Yellowstone" were a perfect fit for Dutton, there's something about a bare face that just worked for Reilly off set.

More goes into Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton transformation than you'd think

While we love Kelly Reilly's fresh-faced look, Beth Dutton's signature smoky eye suits her just as well. The character's overall vibe is a mix of sexy, glamorous, and rough-and-tumble. While there are some pretty questionable outfits worn by Beth Dutton on "Yellowstone," her messy makeup and scars that increase with every season contribute to how Reilly's character is perceived.

In a behind-the-scenes interview, "Yellowstone" makeup and SFX artist Abigail Steele said that her team uses makeup as a way to further the story — and they, as well as the actors, often choose to keep Dutton's scars prominent to avoid making it seem like the character used foundation to cover them up. "Kelly and I had a conversation about that, and it was really unfiltered. Then we both were like, you know what, we should tell people about your scars and how they tell a story that's bigger than just something that's cool and looks cool in a makeup way," Steele said. "It is so much deeper, and there's something so beautiful about scars that are worn and not covered up."

On Reddit, fans pointed out how Dutton's makeup is smudged and messy more often than not — something else they believe to be a smart character choice. "You always see actresses with either perfect makeup or the 'purposely disheveled' raccoon eyes with their mascara running like crazy. Whereas this just looked like she got a little sweaty and her makeup smudged. That happens in real life," one commenter pointed out.

Kelly Reilly's low-key makeup looks show off her excellent skin

In her real life, Kelly Reilly's makeup is far less heavy than what she wears as Beth Dutton on "Yellowstone." In a 2011 blog post by makeup artist Lisa Eldridge describing the look she created for Reilly's appearance at the London premiere of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," Eldridge revealed that less-is-more when it comes to Reilly's face. Eldridge said that, in order to not completely cover up the actor's skin and "fabulous freckles," she used an ultra-light coverage foundation from Chanel very sparingly. To "shape and define Kelly's killer bone structure," Eldridge used a warm-toned, dark pink blush and sheer bronzer.

Even back in 2011, Reilly was embracing a smoky eye. However, Reilly's lived-in smoky eye isn't nearly as messy as Beth Dutton's, as the actor leaned into cool-toned purple for the controlled chaos of her signature moody eye look. "I just love her amazing red hair and icy blue eyes, perfect for a smudgy smoky eye," Eldridge wrote. She explained that Reilly asked her to use her favorite eyeshadow, Dior's Ultra Violet, and added, "I hadn't used this shadow before but found it to be a total winner for bringing out her eyes."
