Kelly Ripa's 2023 Oscars Dress Was Stunning But Didn't Fit The Event

Kelly Ripa has worn some incredible outfits, but it's safe to say she's also worn a few that were *ahem* a tad off the mark. In fact, we'd say that Kelly Ripa has worn some downright inappropriate outfits over the years. As a daytime television host and actor with years of experience under her belt, she's had many opportunities to show off her killer style, often wearing one of our favorite looks of an awards show night. But, there's one moment we look back on and cringe slightly. The actor wore an elegant black beaded gown to the 2023 Oscars that stunned, but may not have been the right choice for the event.

While Ripa's black number may have been a misstep, it didn't earn her a spot on the list of worst-dressed celebs in Oscars history by any means. The unique and stunning creation came courtesy of designer Jason Wu. Upon first glance, it's a beautiful backless gown that features shimmery beading when the light hits it just right. However, upon closer look, you realize that it's completely see-through and Ripa's undergarments are on full display. While a look like this was bold and on-trend, the Oscars may not have been the appropriate setting to debut it. We'd envision this dress being more appropriate for the Grammys or the MTV Video Music Awards rather than the Academy's most prestigious event.

We hate to be those people, but it must be noted that this isn't the first time Kelly Ripa has worn a totally sheer dress to a reputable red carpet event. In 1999, Ripa wore a sparkly white dress to the Daytime Emmys that was arguably even more sheer than her 2023 one. This dress left little to the imagination. While the gown itself was gorgeous and looked like something Bob Mackie himself would have created, it lacked the appropriate finesse for such an event. There's nothing wrong with loving and wearing a sheer dress, it's the occasions for which Ripa chooses to wear them. In a post on Ripa's Instagram account about the look, she even pointed out herself that the dress is quite revealing. It was definitely a more ... adventurous look for the times. 

In a 2023 interview with Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live," Ripa played Cohen's game of Versace or Hibatchi. For this, Ripa was shown a series of past outfits and was asked if she would now wear it ("Versace") or axe it ("Hibatchi"). Honestly, this game was the perfect display of the most outdated outfits Kelly Ripa has ever worn. Even before being shown the outfits, though, Ripa said, "I stand by everything!" So, it's safe to say she isn't afraid to make a bold fashion choice and own it. While the designer of her 1999 sheer dress remains a mystery, and that particular look wasn't shown in the game, we can probably assume that Ripa has no regrets about her 2023 or 1999 look.
