Red Flags In Chelsea Clinton's Marriage We Just Can't Ignore

Ever since she was a teen, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, has been in the spotlight. Of course, as her father used to be the U.S. president, and her mother ran for the same position, Chelsea has grown up with cameras pointed her way since the early '90s. In July 2010, Chelsea married her childhood friend, investor Marc Mezvinsky, whom she had been dating since 2005. Together, the couple has three children, born in 2014, 2016, and 2019.

In 2014, Chelsea opened up about how she and her husband keep their marriage healthy, explaining, "Even when I'm working very hard and my husband, Marc, is working very hard, we prioritize time together" (via Politico). While the two have been married for over 15 years, during that period, the couple has been no stranger to public controversies, which have put their relationship in the spotlight. From speculation about how they paid for their wedding to the pressures they faced when making big life choices, Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky's relationship has had some potential red flags.

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky's marriage was marked by divorce rumors early on

Soon after Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky tied the knot, speculation about the couple's divorce began. And while this isn't necessarily uncommon when it comes to famous couples, what made these rumors more believable were the sources explaining how unhappy the two were. "Chelsea asked her mother and father if they could help her get an annulment," an insider shared with The National Enquirer (via Daily Mail). "She's heartbroken but she isn't afraid to end the marriage. She regrets now that she ever married Marc."

What made the rumors even worse was the fact that Marc ended up going on a skiing trip for three months, leaving his wife behind. However, the couple ended up surviving their first year together, and whether they truly had regrets about their marriage early on remains a mystery. The two put on a happy front in public, and in the years to come, many forgot that Chelsea and Marc's marriage was initially plagued with separation rumors.

Chelsea Clinton shared negative things about Marc Mezvinsky's parenting

In 2020, Chelsea Clinton spoke to People about motherhood after she had given birth to the couple's third child in 2019. While the former first daughter praised her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, as a father, she revealed that he didn't change his daughter's diaper if there was someone else who could do it. "I tease him about [it] because it is the exception. He's so attentive, he's so engaged with her, reading to her, helping her get dressed, getting her into her pajamas at night, helping give her a bath. Everything else," Clinton added. However, the revelation didn't go by unnoticed.

Soon after, Chelsea shared on "Today" that her husband was "mortified" by her public comments, and that things had changed in their parenting routines (via People). "He's working on it," she explained. "He was really rather mortified that I shared that, so he's been changing lots of diapers in the last week." Nevertheless, the revelation about his preference for not changing the diapers of his own child rubbed many the wrong way.

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky's 2010 wedding was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky tied the knot on July 31, 2010, at a ceremony held in Rhinebeck, New York. And while the wedding was fancy and expensive, with Chelsea being one of the celebrities who stunned in Vera Wang wedding dresses, rumors began swirling that the couple couldn't afford such a big bash. "Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends," a statement by Chelsea's parents said (via The Guardian), but speculation about how the wedding was funded overshadowed the occasion.

In particular, former aide of the Clintons Doug Band claimed that some of the money from the family's non-profit foundation ended up being used for the wedding, as was revealed by WikiLeaks in 2016. The family immediately denied it, with Bill Clinton writing on X (formerly Twitter), "No Clinton Foundation funds — dedicated to Haiti or otherwise — were used to pay for Chelsea's wedding. It's not only untrue, it's a personal insult to me, to Hillary, and to Chelsea and Marc." However, the wedding, which was estimated to have cost over $3 million by the Daily Mail, ended up becoming quite the controversy for the couple. Finances are never to be taken lightly, as they can easily cause problems in relationships.

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky faced pressure to become parents

It certainly isn't uncommon for young married couples to feel pressure to have children, and it certainly seems as if Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky experienced that firsthand. While the two share three children and seem to be happy parents, there has been speculation about Hillary Clinton pressuring them to give her grandchildren.

"Hillary wanted this marriage because she wants to be a grandmother more than she wanted to be president," Bill Clinton told David Letterman (via Politico). Chelsea shared a similar sentiment while being interviewed by Rachael Ray, whose complete transformation is astounding. "If one of my parents were sitting here, they would tell you without blinking an eye that it would make them the happiest thing on earth if I were to make them grandparents, and they would say it so effusively, and I would feel a bit of pressure," Chelsea admitted (via E! News).

While wishes for grandchildren are common, the pressures that parents can put on their children aren't healthy. Speaking to HuffPost, international wellness and relationship coach Teresha Young explained that it is crucial for both partners to want children without any outsiders impacting their decision. "Deciding to have children isn't something anyone should be pushed into," she explained.
