HGTV Star Hilary Farr Makes Transitioning To Gray Hair Look So Chic

There's no doubt that your hair changes in many ways as you age, and one of the most noticeable is going gray. While it's completely fine to want to dye your hair to keep the silver strands at bay, there's also nothing wrong with embracing the natural evolution of your tresses. There are many celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair, and HGTV star Hilary Farr has joined their ranks.

The 74-year-old British-Canadian designer has long been known for her keen eye for design and the bold decisiveness she showed during her time on "Love It or List It." Now, she's applied that same no-nonsense attitude to her personal image. Since exiting the show in late 2023, fans following Farr on social media have taken notice of a gradual transition in her appearance. The HGTV alum took to Instagram in January 2025 asking followers to help her granddaughter reach her Girl Scout cookie sales goals, and Farr was showing the first clear sign of her natural, graying roots.

For a woman who spent nearly two decades on television as a brunette, the natural transition to gray felt revolutionary. Of course, fans flooded the comments about how they loved her new hair. One said, "Also love the hair. Let my color grow out during Covid and never looked back. Freedom from chemicals and fuss!" Another fan applauded Farr's readiness to let her gray roots progress naturally, as the grow out can be difficult.

Hilary Farr encourages older women to just try going gray

Since Hilary Farr debuted her natural gray in 2025, she's received lots of comments on subsequent posts from followers praising how amazing she looks, thanking her for showcasing her silver tresses, and even opening up about their own journey to gray. Though Farr regularly shares posts on a number of different topics — whether it be her latest home renovation project or a message about breast cancer awareness — the comments are inevitably flooded with questions about her hair color.

While the designer doesn't usually reply, it seems there was one particular question that caught her attention. A fan asked what finally made her decide to ditch the dye, and Farr's response was as sharp and decisive as her design critiques on "Love It or List It." The HGTV star kept it simple and replied, "Grow it out and if you hate it — go back to coloring your hair."

It's that level of confidence to fearlessly give something a try that makes Farr's gray hair look so chic. Based on her Instagram posts, she clearly transitioned to gray the right way, skipping root touch-ups and patiently growing out her hair. It also helps that she maintains a sharp bob, which makes her silver tresses look all the more polished and intentional. The fan-approved transformation proves gray can easily become the most sophisticated shade in the room — if you let it.
