When it comes to signature hair colors, Emma Stone is best known for her fiery red shade. However, back in 2007, when Stone was still trying to have her big breakthrough, the actor was actually rocking dyed brown hair with bangs. In fact, it was only when she got cast in the 2007 comedy film "Superbad" that the actor had her hair dyed red, and that choice wasn't entirely hers.

The film's producer Judd Apatow revealed in the 2025 Andrew Buss book "I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of its Generation" that because Stone and her co-star Martha MacIsaac were both brunettes, he had suggested that Stone dye her hair red. "So we dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before," he explained (via People). "And since then, she has cursed me because now people love her with red hair and she's had to live with that for a lot of her adult life. It was a real tossed-off thought from someone who knows nothing about makeup and hair." And thus, the dramatic hair transformation of Emma Stone began.

In 2018, Stone's hair colorist Tracey Cunningham revealed it was the producer who actually introduced them. "He told me he was directing a movie called 'Superbad' starring this young actress, Emma Stone, who was just a teenager at the time," she explained to Refinery29. "He wanted her to be a redhead in the movie, and he needed me to make her red. Without hesitation I made her really red — and she looked incredible." Stone has stuck to red locks throughout most of her career so far, but despite her earlier adventures with brunette hair, her natural hair color is actually blond.

Emma Stone is one of the celebs whose dyed hair looks arguably better than their natural hair color. Over the almost two decades in the spotlight, Stone has gone back to blond hair on a couple of occasions, including in the early 2020s. Each transformation has been the work of Stone's hair colorist Tracey Cunningham, who called her 2023 shade "super blonde," explaining, "she just shot three huge movies in a row and at some point, you want to look like yourself" (via People).

However, even though Stone likes to go back to blond hair every now and then, her hair colorist agrees that red suits the "Poor Things" actor the best. "I always tell people that one of the biggest reasons why Emma's hair looks so incredible red is because she looks like a redhead. Despite the fact that her natural color is blond, the red suits her so well," she told Refinery29. "It's a unique case, because almost everyone in Emma's family has red hair except her. Her mom is a beautiful natural redhead, and it's actually on both sides of her family. I think there's something about those genetics that make the red shade look so gorgeous with her skin tone and her eyes — it's just a look that she can pull off exquisitely." 

Emma Stone's head-turning face transformation through the years shows that her hair tweaks completely change her look, as they did in 2024. That year, Stone went back to red, this time opting for an even deeper shade, before lightening her locks to a more orangey color in 2025 and 2026.
