Sally Field's Thoughts On Marriage After 2 Divorces Are Sure To Make You Laugh

Few actors give us the warm and fuzzies like the beloved Sally Field, who, over the course of her six-decade long career, has won dozens of awards, including two Oscars. Stunning at 79 years old, Sally Field's transition to gray hair makes her look effortlessly chic. But the actor's love life hasn't been as easy to maintain as her style. Field was married to her high school sweetheart Steve Craig from 1968 to 1975, and to producer Alan Greisman from 1984 to 1994. Those marriages are long in the past, and it's safe to say Field is over the grieving process after her two divorces. So, would she ever do the whole wife thing again? Field was the guest on an episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' "Wiser Than Me" podcast in March 2024. Toward the end of the hour-long chat, Louis-Dreyfus asked Field whether she had any interest in getting married again.

The "Steel Magnolias" star said, "I can't imagine, I mean, it certainly all depends on meeting somebody I wanted to spend more than 37 seconds with, and I can't imagine that either, so I don't know." Cue the collective head nods. Field added, "I've just never been good at picking up a real person, a partner, to be with who would be loving and know me and not want to change me and also be challenging to me." The trepidation is totally fair because how to know if you are ready to start dating again after divorce can be tricky business.

Sally Field has three sons who each caught the storytelling bug

Despite being unlucky in love, Sally Field's failed marriages came with a silver lining — the actor shares two sons, Peter and Eli Craig, with her first husband, and a third son, Sam Greisman, with her second husband. The moment she became a mom for the first time, Field transformed into the force of nature she is today. "There was something in me that felt so fiercely about [Peter] that I felt if I can take care of him, I can take care of myself," the actor said. "I didn't recognize the fierceness in me."

All three of Field's sons have followed their mother into show business —  Peter Craig is an in-demand writer, with credits on "The Town," "Top Gun: Maverick," and "Gladiator II," to name a few; Eli Craig is a writer-director, who released a horror film, "Clown in a Cornfield" in 2025; and Sam Greisman is breaking into the industry as a writer and director as well. It would seem that Field's sons have inherited her talent, and can appreciate her as both a mom and a creative force. In a February 2023 essay he penned for People, Greisman wrote, "[My mother] has given me the chance to see her as a woman and an artist, always striving to be better, always looking around the next bend, willing to be vulnerable."
