Drew Barrymore's Gray Hair Transformation Fit Her So Well We Wish It Wasn't A Wig
There are many celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair, but some are hesitant to embrace their natural color for fear of looking "old." However, on a March 2026 episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show," the host was further proof that going silver can be fabulous. Drew Barrymore invited celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton on the show to give guest Valerie Bertinelli a gray hair makeover — and wound up getting one herself in the process. The two women looked stunning in Appleton's custom dyed wigs, which many fans thought suited both of them better than their current brown hair.
To create both wigs, Appleton used a combination of darker tones, low lights, and white pieces near the front, all of which he toned to a complementary ashy shade. Highlighting gray hair adds dimension, keeping it from looking flat, and Barrymore loved the dynamic color. "I can't believe how good I feel!" she exclaimed during the segment. Bertinelli wondered if she should dye her own hair to match the wig. "Grey hair, should I actually do it?" Bertinelli quipped, winking to the camera.
Fans in the comments section of another clip from the segment were quick to celebrate Barrymore's gorgeous temporary look. "Do it Drew!!! Looks stunning," one person wrote. "Going grey is one of the most liberating things I've done for myself and I highly recommend it," another said. Appleton's expert styling allowed us to see just how well Barrymore rocks silver — now, we're eagerly waiting for the talk show host to go gray full-time!
Drew Barrymore probably isn't ready to ditch her brown hair
Actor-turned-talk show host Drew Barrymore is aging like fine wine. Barrymore, whose acting career took off in 1982 as Gertie in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," has been in the spotlight for four decades, so we've truly gotten to see the former child star grow up. Barrymore is 51 years old as of 2026, but while going gray would be age appropriate (and clearly fan approved), the actor may not be ready to part with her brunette tresses just yet.
In a 2024 interview with Oprah Daily, Barrymore explained that her signature brown hair brings a sense of stability to her life. "I want to change my mental state, my behavior, and my ways of dealing with things — those are the changes that I work really hard on — but my hair is not one of them," she said. Barrymore revealed that her hair color isn't something she wants to experiment with, and the most she's willing to do is cover her grays. "I found a color I feel confident in, and I don't question it," she noted.
However, that interview was two years ago, so perhaps she's ready to reconsider and let her hair go fully gray — especially after trying out such a chic silver wig on her show. Even if the actor isn't ready to rock gray hair just yet, she's still allowing herself to age gracefully. Drew Barrymore looks flawless without makeup in the bare-faced and vulnerable photos she regularly shares online. Maybe the fearlessness Barrymore has for showing off her aging skin will one day extend to her hair.
