Summer 2026 Swimsuit Trends Perfect For Older Women
With summer quickly rolling around, it's time to think about swimwear. Though there are several outdated swimsuit trends to retire in 2025, this year's crop of beachwear fashion has something for everyone. While barely-there bikinis are still being packed for vacays and poolside hangs, thankfully, designers are keeping older women in mind and creating more mature styles. If you dread trying on swimsuits every year, rest assured that there are many options that don't just hang on by a skimpy string.
Aside from the fit, patterns and colors make a huge difference in how confident you feel in swimwear. If you're over 50, a pink polka dot bikini may read a bit young, but a color-blocked one-piece feels less juvenile, while also creating a flattering silhouette. Swimwear shopping doesn't have to be overwhelming for older women, and in 2026, there are lots of trendy styles to choose from.
Ruching is flattering on all bodies
Ruched swimsuits are hot right now, and this trend is particularly great for older women who want a little extra fabric at their bust, hips, or waist. The gathering can give extra volume where needed or cover any areas you may want to conceal. In 2026, designers have found even more clever and creative ways to incorporate the style, from diagonal ruching with carefully-crafted cut-outs to textured bikini bottoms.
For anyone in the over-40 crowd seeking a bit of support around their midsection, ruched swimwear is a great way to stay stylish and confident at the beach or poolside. When shopping for a bathing suit, stylist Rebecca Kahane Pankow told Yahoo! Shopping, "It should feel supportive and sculpting while still allowing you to move comfortably. You want a fabric with enough compression and recovery so it maintains its shape throughout wear, especially once wet." Swimsuits with ruching around the waistline are ideal for creating definition and a streamlined silhouette, so if that's something you're looking for, this trend is just for you.
Sporty swimwear gives great support and an athletic vibe
Even if you're happy as a clam lounging on the beach rather than hanging ten on a surfboard, you can still look like a total baddie with athletic swimwear, which is another trend popping in summer 2026. One-piece suits with broad straps and minimal detailing will give you that sporty look, like this style featured by content creator Amanda Perkins. The two-toned teal one-piece with large stripes on the side looks simple and athletic, but still enhances your overall silhouette. "It gives you that hourglass shape, so it does slim you just the slightest. So that color blocking detail does give you a little bit more of a flattering figure," Perkins noted.
Performance-based sporty styles, such as long-sleeved rash guards and zippered bodysuits, are also having a moment in 2026. These options offer more sun protection, and some are even made with UV protective fabrics, which is ideal for those looking to take care of their aging skin. Many of these styles are very versatile, and you can potentially throw a pair of jeans on over your bodysuit and head out for a casual dinner. Kamari Swim founder Madison Martina told Marie Claire that 2026 will feature a lot of this type of multi-use swimwear. "We're seeing a shift toward pieces that feel both statement-making and timeless, designed to transition seamlessly from beach to lifestyle," she said.
Skirted styles are fresh and flirty
One thing every woman in her 60s should have in her closet is a skirted swimsuit, and luckily, this style is trending in 2026. You'll be seeing variations of this look everywhere, from cute ruffles on bikini bottoms to full-on skorts. If you want extra coverage, swim dresses are the ultimate for providing comfort while staying on-trend this year. YouTuber Michelle Lanter showed off a version of this style in a gorgeous ocean-blue shade that had a criss-cross bust, ruffled shoulders, and a full skirt with an attached bottom. "I love how it covers everything up. It's got the ruching down the sides, it's got that crossover, which is really flattering," she shared.
If you want a bit more length than a skirted swimsuit provides, sarongs are the style you'll be wearing both on and off the beach this summer. These cover-ups are super in vogue at the moment, and there are so many ways you can wear them. The simplest way is to tie it over your waist and make a knot, or you can fold it in half and wear it as a skirt by wrapping it around your hips and tucking the end in. Throw on a breezy shirt and some sandals, and you have an instant summer outfit
